Sup everyone, finally ready to start my thread. With so much great work already posted I have a lot of catching up to do.
Going to be working on a Taric visual update and slight redesign. I am looking to turn Taric into a badass that can still support but also be a top lane heavyweight. Below is a quick concept I made to block out some ideas. I am pretty happy with the upper body and shoulders, but the lower body still needs work, probably bigger boots to balance out the top half, also not sure what to do about the underarmor scalemail. Going to start blocking him out in 3D to get a better feel for everything.
Latest: Thanks to everyone who commented with feedback and helped me during the contest, I learned a lot and I hope everyone had as much fun as I did. There are a ton of amazing submissions so good luck to everyone entering.
For Fun now that the contest is over, I threw Taric into Unreal to see how he looked with normals and lighting. =P
I'm digging this so far! Definitely more manly than he is currently. I agree with you about the under-armor, it's taking a bit away from his bigger pieces. I also think the hammer head could use a bit of beefing up, something to add to his strong silhouette. Keep it up!
Quick update, getting a better feel for the theme for my Taric. Moving a bit away from my first concept and going for more of a fantasy Iron man/Tychus thing.
In his lore Taric is from another world and was brought to Runeterra through a mysterious spell. In my version while traveling between worlds and being exposed to so much raw magical energy his body was fused with his armor and gems. So his Armor is him, he cannot take it off and the gems power sustains him and keeps him alive. Thought it would be an interesting spin on things. That is all more of a lore thing and design wise wont mean much other then its a dude in a ton of armor and some of the gem placement might remind you of iron man. =P
Jumped over to Zbrush to take a break from modeling the armor in maya. Pretty happy with the face, but I am still trying things with the hair and the headgear, need to try and make a cool circlet. Also finished up the armor on the arms and simplified the shoulder gems so they read better. Also hue shifted the colors a bit, not sure which one I like better. feedback appreciated.
Great stuff! Nice work on the armour especially I prefer the red armour and light blue crystals personally, it seems more mythical and a less 'standard' to me
Wow, i really like your Taric. I think he matches quite well with the vibe that Taric gives, peace, gems, tankyness, sexy voice. Looking forward to see him done.
Thanks for the feedback everyone, glad people are liking it so far. Looks like I need to find a nice middle ground between the two color schemes, there are things to like from both.
Dantert: I like the simpler slicked back hair as well but Taric's Fabio hair is pretty iconic and gives him some of his personality, so I will keep trying to get the first hairstyle to a better place. =P
And to Neer, Chantel and anyone else wondering here is a link to the matcap I used for the skin. It was made by the very talented Hazerdous and works great. Hazerdous if you see this, thanks for sharing the matcap. =D
Dantert: Ha that is awesome, def what I am going for with my Taric.
Beastypet: No, atm all the hardsurface is made in maya
Updates!! Some asked for more crystals, trying out adding some to the back let me know what you guys things. Added the cloth bits, waist and thigh armor, and a circlet.
Dude! this is a reaaally cool spin on Taric.
I have a suggestion regarding the crystals. I realize it's early on the process still but once you start defining the textures Try and give them a bit more life. What I mean is, instead of them being all flat blue, go for a more quartz type of look. Maybe even adding some of the roughness they have when coming out of the rocks.
keeping his signature blue as the main color but throwing some variation around.
some examples:
Taric is probably the only support I don't play. He is simply uncool.
But your version is looking awesome so far !
Looking forward to see more, keep it up!
Managed to get an update ready before being completely sucked into playing Warlords and Dreanor, blizz keeps pulling me back in. XD
The body is for the most part done, will do a damage/detail pass on the armor, but not too much, Taric likes to keep his armor clean and fabulous. Shield and Hammer still need to be modeled.
Small update: Modeled the shield, only have the hammer left. I also went back and made some changes to the feet, waist and back armor, they are pretty minor though so didn't bother taking new screenshots. Next update so be final full body Taric in all his glory. =P
Small update for today, finally made his hammer. Size wise it will be a large one handed Thor like hammer, a little more feasible then the giant 2-hander Taric swings around in game right now. =P
Ready to export the hi-poly and start the retopo. While I do that though I will also be taking my hi-poly renders for the final turn in, going to give keyshot a try, been hearing good things about it. So hopefully I will have more updates soon if time permits, holidays and all.
Texture update, trying to making the classic Taric color scheme work, but it might be too simple, just too much blue. But now that I have this baseline set, I will try out various other colors. Doubled up on the shoulder pads again and added crystals to his shield, let me know what you guys think.
I really like that you went back to the original color scheme, other wise it would have been hard to indentify him as taric. Maybe switching the hair color would help create some contrast. Can't wait this piece finished!
D_Wall - I just used the usual Xnormals to get all my bakes from. Normals, Occlusion, bent normals and curvature maps. Got my top down gradient and some simple lighting from Maya. Turned the normal into my spec/cavity and thats about it. I am not much of a painter so I rely heavily on my bakes. =3
Slosh - Thanks, I will try to throw in some warmness where I can but its hard while trying to keep to the original color scheme, maybe switching the hair color, like Jrancourt suggests, to something warmer will help. I am open to suggestions, right now I am just trying all kinds of colors. =P
Would still love more feedback, especially from the painters out there. I want to keep things relatively simple like league, but still make sure it has all the details it needs.
See i did the same thing but I got ton's of artifacting on mine while your's is just....fantastic haha. Well anywho your submission is looking great. I think Riot's gonna have a really hard time deciding who get's placed where :P
D_Wall - Maybe I used more polys for baking to get around artifacting? I usually use a little more polys on the mesh I plan to bake with then afterwards reduce it further. My low poly for baking was around 13-14k
Here are some color schemes I have been trying out, do I have enough choices? Which one is everyones favorite, let me know. XD
Wow those look awesome. I like how you included similar colour schemes such as the Emerald, Armor of the Fifth Age, and Bloodstone skins. I think they all look great, but I'd probably vote for the default bluish-teal colours just so it's most recognizable as Taric.
I'd go with either number 2 or number 4, they borth fit somewhat with the original color scheme, but also has that mix of warm and cool colors. Awesome job man!

It's hard to find nice skin matcaps

I mean, so did the textures, but that AO bake is suuuuuuper clean
what'd you use to bake?
