EDIT: SOLVED, rolled back to ye' olde 3ds max 2012 and DX9.
It looks like most of the alpha sorting issues withing 3ds (2014) have been dealt with, but I still get one issue which isn't a deal-breaker but it's making modeling hair planes in the 3ds viewport harder than it could be,
white outlines.
Note: I tried the other drawing modes and they have worse issues (legacy modes not drawing graphite tools correctly, flickering, dx9 not alpha sorting, etc)
