A game VFX art contest! I cant miss out on this. Ill post up my ideas later today.
Im wondering if we have to make these for a specific hero. I also seem to be the only one not using Unreal engine. This is going to put me at a disadvantage :P

Alright thinking of going with a chain type metal orb for a projectile. It will shoot up and down down like it has weight with trailing chain trails swirling behind. Though this is just an idea. Ill think up more tonight. This idea seems a bit bland.
Cruddy concept one
Thought a second delayed aoe in a ring around the black hole would be interesting. It would go off once the blackholes shockwave reaches the right radius. This would only be around 0.2 seconds or so.
I think it may be a bit too boring though. Little runey details can only go so far.
Another sweet concept art image. Idea behind this is the character rolls a barrel of sticky flammable tar over a rectangular area. After a short delay a plane flys over and drops bombs down in a line. Dealing damage and igniting the ground for a small duration. The tar would slow. Though with this it means I have to compete with Jinxs awesome explosion effects. Not sure how those cartoony effect are made. Will have to look into it.
Oh right the red rings are the character calling in the plane via radio.
Got this idea from bombardier from HoN. Though he doesnt have the sticky tar
Just jotting down my ideas quickly while I still remember them. This is just a standard projectile to charge up explode effect.
And a beer keg attack. Ill get one of these started on the weekend.
Starting concept 3. Should have something up and animating round Sunday. Obviously this texture isn't finished. Just wanted to chuck something up. Not sure what colours to go with yet.
I think ill go with concept 2 for my second effect. People I showed it to seemed to like the idea.
Scrapped this up quickly at the end of work (I didn't have much time obviously). Just trying to get all the shapes down before I start making the textures. Still not 100% on what colours to use. I want to get another colour in there. If anyone has any ideas do tell!
Its the start of this concept here . Obviously textures are very place holder. Complete with random rune circle off the net and comic sans writing !

Alright an update on the effect. Crisped it up and made the runes a lot more toony. That last rune circle was a placeholder. Either way this is still missing all its animations and particle effects and... well heaps. However its starting to slowly take shape! Should have probably picked a more basic effect. This ones going to be quite complex :P
By the way the gif is sped up. I dont know how to fix that : / It doesn't rotate nearly that fast! Also yes the ground is a picture of league of legends gameplay. I couldn't find a ground texture so this will have to do : /
Im getting excited. Ill be able to actually animate it and add particles soon. Doing the mesh lay out stage is so boooooring. I still have to add the glowing cracks and a few extra swirly meshs coming down to the orb. Sadly im off to the snow this weekend so wont be able to advance this much further just yet. I want to add a hint of another colour. Not sure what though. Leave feedback if you have any!

Starting to add particles. This gif doesn't show it very well. Its too pixely and jerky. Either way its starting to come together on my screen!
Having a real bad time getting getting these gifs looking good. Trying to get in more sucking motion. More animation tweaks and so on. Also getting in a bit more colour. Still need some particles on the black orb.
(I'm gonna say that to every single thread. XD)

Alright smashed out the second piece. obviously I still need to set up bloom meshs and all that. Timings bad and probably needs some rotation. Needs a shockwave and particles. Either way this is just to show the general idea of what im trying to create.
Hope to have it finished end of next week. Going to pick a more simplistic skill as my next piece. This ones taking ages. If you have any feedback on timing or anything do tell. I think I need a short delay before the sun explosion.

So effect rolls... implosion *pause* rapid shrink. It may help give a bit more anticipation, like you are just holding your breath waiting for it to collapse

Wish I could get lighting working. Guess im stuck with no lights for this piece.
Maybe for your light ray coming down: Either have its diameter shrink down to the size of the center sphere at the same time, while increasing it's intensity or lighten its values to fake the intensity.
Or, Have it grow to the edges of your largest rune circle on the ground?
I have some feedback on the chains, but I'll paint it out first and atatch it, to give a better understanding with my suggestion
Now with sun actualy exploding. shockwave and impact still need a lot of work.
Alright this is the final of this effect for now. I will polish it up more if I have time. Its still a bit janky in places but im happy enough with it. I need to get started on the next effect. Once thats done I can look at this again

Someone suggested making the oil bronze colored instead. I think that may make it more contrasty so ill try it out. Sucks having no spec and normal maps! >: <
