Not sure if many of you (or any of you) know this community called Orkut by Google, has finally shut its door to the members. It started back in 2004 and I was surprised that it survived this long. This was one of the communities where you had to be invited in.
First off...WOW. This was surprising to me that no one knew about Orkut but then it wasnt as surprising because Facebook took off and started spreading like a fire in the forest. Perhaps it has something to do with them welcoming everyone where as, for Ockut you had to be invited by one of your friends who happens to have an account to enforce the idea of having sensible people in the community.
Secondly; I didnt know that people are actually tired of Facebook and looking for ways to move on to something else. =\
I agree that ello's ugly. I think the monospaced font and the spacing in the design just make it hard to read.
I think if they just tightened up the design (and dropped the crappy font) it'd be more usable. But I think the crowd who want a cool hipster site are already on Twitter/tumblr/rotary telephone anyway
Yeah ello looks too much like a bad Tumblr theme, but I like the direction and mindset they have. I like Google+, but Google as a company is too much like Facebook. Being able to have Circles and communities is great, Facebook already puts people and friends into circles, it would be cool if they were automatic in same ways but tweakable. I hate having to put Facebook into most recent every time I go to the news feed.
why do people keep trying to re-invent social media?? the entire concept is bullshit.
It's the dot-com goldrush of this era. Start a social network. Get a million users (half are bots and fakes, don't tell the investors). Sell for enough money to buy a small island. Take your money and run.

Might be a better idea to see what's broken with the ones we have currently. Unless you mean the whole idea of the existence of social medias is a bad idea; which I disagree.

But I think Facebook is too solid to be taken down easily now...

People are talking a lot about Ello right now, if you're in to that sort of thing.
Try this. Invite might take awhile.
