Shortbow – Horsebow

Based around mounted archery practiced in Eurasia, mix of styles rather than true to one area.
Trying to make it fit with the current Mason Archer styles, may not be different enough to be worth including but if time allows I'll try something more exotic.

Those bows are sweet. The red and black texturing on the left is pretty cool.

I think bows are harder than swords to come with a original version, maybe the key is in the details. I'm looking forward to those textures!

Yeah, I don't think the bow is really going to scream anything other than generic but carrying on anyway, progress has been slow due to other commitments. Been frantically trying to learn how to use marvelous designer for the leather wraps before the beta expires, still to add the ties to it, not sure if I should try and physically do it in MD, sculpt them or just make them in maya.

Cheers guys, some more progress here, not quite finished texture. Been messing with the Socket previewer thing, but the bows don't seem to line up properly in the "longbow point" socket, this is with all the bows not just mine, I don't think I could have accidentally edited the cooked content so this might be an issue? The helmet socket seems to work fine, not tried the other weapons.

I don't think it is a big problem, you can edit origin of your skeletal model. You can adjust rotation and offset right in UDK, just look helmet tutorial where they rotate helmet.

Yeah, I've managed to work around it I just thought I better ask (maybe better in the Q&A thread) as then bows already in the game seem to act the same way so it may be an oversight or I am misunderstanding something.

Oh jeez, I forgot about that. It's actually because the bow animation offsets the model, so to get a real preview of it you need to play the bow's animation on the preview mesh. Uhh... yeah...



That's all you need, the animset and an animation name

Oh, sweet! Thanks that solves some presentation issues too, is it possible to have an arrow in the socket previewer too?

So, once it's skinned I realise this shape of bow really doesn't work very well with the weird asymmetrical bone structure of the bow in the game, doh! Animations mean I can't make it bend back as much as a horsebow should so it doesn't really look right and I'd need more bones for the string to stop the clipping too. I guess custom animations are out of the question (and out of my knowledge) so this is as good as I can make it I think. I learned a tonne in the process anyway so I'm not too bitter I can't get it to work right!

I have managed to get this setup in a more workable manner. But I'm not going to complete the set, can I get this thread renamed to

somehow or will it not matter for submission?

Edit your first post, change name and also place new name in the first line, so it will be visible. I don't think it will be much problem for organizers.
