also in regards to the domain suffix (.de) - it doesn't matter at all, I imagine you're German so .de is fine, just go with whatever you want... personally I have a .me - but who knows, maybe that's why I don't have a job due to my domain :poly122:
This is quite an old debate, both sides have a good argument IMO. However, I don't think a $10-20 investment per year is a good indication of commitment to the craft. It's not necessary, and personally I find it quite impressive seeing what people do with various sites like Blogspot. I've gotten far more compliments with what I have done with Blogspot than my previous site. If you make it work, then very few people will care what top level domain you are not renting.
I'm not talking about not using free plateform like blogspot, weebly, etc. I've seen incredible website perfectly presenting the work on either blogspot, wix or whatever plateform you use (Hell, i use weebly and i love it). As long as the work is shown, that the work is top quality, that it's clear and that anyone can find what they looks for, doesn't matter what you use.
But seriously, it doesn't cost that much having a domain name and it's easier for everyone that way, and it just shows you are serious. I'll remember much more easily and take more seriously mrpotatoskin.com than mrpotatoskin.whateverwebsite.cc.
I agree with Felix. I use WordPress myself and don't pay for hosting, but a custom domain name has its benefits. I have nothing against Wix, Weebly, WordPress and the like but I hate seeing ads on portfolios. It's a minor thing compared to the quality of work and the portfolio itself but it helps.
Oh I remember lurking on that sci-fi pub thread. The new addition to the portfolio is real nice and congrats on Firaxis (if you weren't there before that scene).
