Regarding tri count, it would probably be easiest if you post an image or two so people can get an idea of where/how you might be able to edit to reduce.
I can't speak to Max, but I find it very easy to import smds into Blender using Valve's Blender Source Tools. From there you could export to obj/fbx for Max.
i'm going to follow everything you say, step by step for the importe export, i'm not gonna think about that for the moment.
PS: The modele i used it's an Axe from WoW, and it's just an exercice to understand how it works
So get rid of all the edge loops you added to make hard edges, and lower the sides to 5 on the handle and see what your Tri count is after that. If you still need help, post a new screenshot afterwards and we'll go from there.
Here are my steps for smd to Blender:
Download and install Blender http://www.blender.org/download/
Download Valve's free Blender Source Tools https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Blender_Source_Tools
[do not unzip this]
Open Blender
File-User Preferences-Addons Tab
Click on button at bottom of dialog box “Install from File...” and choose your blender_source_tools zip file
Now you should be able to go to File-Import and see in your list Source Engine (.smd, etc), choose that
Navigate to an smd folder, for example: models\heroes\pugna\smd and select one of the smds (be sure to choose Y for the Up Axis in the left panel settings under “Import SMD...”) (this assumes you've downloaded and unzipped one of these: http://www.dota2.com/workshop/requirements )
If you want to export go to File-Export and choose a format that works for you
Hope that helps.
@Kip McSkipster, thanks for the link but the link to Valve's free Blender Source Tools isn't working
just pratice to understand the workflow
that's it :poly121:
