Accurate color calibration?

hello, i am in the market for a new monitor, and figured i should take the time to get some education about color calibration. my setup now is not color correct, ive got a cheap gaming video card and an off the shelf 1600x900 monitor.

I dont really know enough about the subject to really ask a specific question. all I know is that when i see my stuff on other displays the colors look different. where should I start?
