I can't believe I let Bbox85 talk me into this
. But this should be fun! I just started the other day and am getting into the vehicle.
I am looking at a lot of dirt track racing and offroad stuff. As a kid my favorite racing was Sprint Car (local races all the time) and I dreamed for ages of being a sprint car driver so i'm excited to venture into that territory... sorta. I don't even know.
Here is a concept with some of the ideas just lazily slapped around it.
Driver to come.

lol. Can't wait to see progress on this dude! I see lots of cool directions this can go.
Also stuff is designed and new. Though it is like a lot of offroad vehicles where custom work is done like gutting out fiberglass... but the car will be painted and the driver is somebody who has been doing this stuff for a long time.
80's dirt track racing....
lol! Yeah the competition is rad, but the worry was just time. I hope I can get something done.
can't wait for more man
Awesome!
XD
Snailman's attitude feels good too
I definitely will be looking at your character to set the bar for when I tackle mine. I think we've got a lot of similar types of fabric. Any insight into getting clean patterns like around the cuffs and side torso area? It's folding pretty nicely.
Lilith, Cool. That works for me
JacqueChoi, thanks man
Gannon, Push Modifier. Always push modifier. and Inflate in ZB.
Looprix, Racing coveralls. It looked better in my head, but i'll take it
BagelHero, Thanks. Was originally going to be very realistic proportions actually
OrganizedChaos, Thanks!
BBox, i'll keep the feet!
Lightbird, I believe that is the plan. But still with breathing room.
Geno: Lol! Cool! He is out though.
Kerner: lol! yeah i'd like to keep him around.. May be he came with the car? LOL. Well i'll save time.
EarthQuake: Thanks! Here it is.
The tubes on the front and back jet out slime that he drifts on that other drivers have mojor difficulty with, knocking them out of the race. He can corral people in etc...
Tearing a car down completely and then working on a rotisserie gives you a pretty good idea on how things work. Quite a few things are stupid-simple!!! (car is 1968). And some of it is annoying and a mess (Electrical for example).
It is impossible for me to really convey it all and I just don't have the time and patience.... especially since if i'm ognna finish this competition I really need to sprint on the low poly. The car and driver have all kinds of stupid parts all over them.
But here are a few things.
FRAME RAILS: Understand frame rails. Look at how people build T-Bucket cars. A basic understanding of framerails will help you build a believable car/hot rod.
(this one is really simple)
My car project is a "Unibody" Dodge.. But I had framerail supports welded in. Check out framerail addons and upgrades.

Sheet Metal: The sheet metal is welded or bolted to the frame. It is thinner so it has to be supported... This means "BEAD ROLLING". This brings believably to your underside. This is required to keep the metal stiff, otherwise it would pop like when you play with a Snapple cap.
Also holes in it for draining water and crap... Truly there are little spots all around your car for draiining water and dirt and garbage.. The reason why your old car is rotting is cause that stuff gets plugged up and leaves and crap sit in there, like just inside the quarter panel. And it is the devil. BTW a lot of these holes have rubber boots in them. Annoying shitty rubber boots.
All the parts are actually individual and welded together. Some have lips so they butt together nicely and then have sealer and body work to make things look solid and slick. Knowing those cut-areas can be good for constructing things and also making a car look more "primitive" and realistic.
I own a bead roller and have never used it. Welding sheet metal is not easy . I don't know what i'm doing.
Front and Rear Suspension!
There is a lot here. Old cars have shitty leaf spring suspension in the rear. Here is what I just look at to get an idea for vehicles. This is also what is going in my car so, yeah. I am biased to all this stuff.
ALTER-K-TION: This is a replacement front end suspension for late 60's Mopar. Easy to look at and get ideas for how things work. The upper control area attaches to a piece welded to... you guessed it... the frame rails! No need to really get into those details too much. For art I fudge the shit out of everything. But this should help.
4-Link Rear: Very cheap and simple 4-Link rears. Easy to understand. In my case the 4-Link actually bolts up to where the Leaf Spring would in the front. That piece is hard fixed to..... the frame rail!
The front part there welds and or bolts into the frame rails. The top big bar is welded up into the area in between the rear wheel housing. You can see this piece on my Petrol/Blood entry if you look close.
Engine: Seriously sits on a couple of bolts on the crossmember of the front susp. LOL!
Brake Lines: They are all over the place and they actually go through the frame rails and such. and I do not have a single one on my entry! No brakes! . Radiator lines. Linkages. . Yeah, no.
Radiator usually has a fan and a way for air to come in through the front to cool it. I have a small grill. but yeah. minor details there . Gotta turn your brain off for fantasy vehicles.
Looking into "Full tub" and "Mini tub" can help you construct a car/vehicle as well.
Also, run searches for "Body in White" on google. The images will be self explanatory to what "Body in White" means.
Really it is just about making it look awesome and fun!
Thanks for the knowledge bombs. A lot of the time, knowing the right phrase to drop into google is half the battle.
