I use Maya at home and Max at work and don't really have any problems with the navigation. Each application is like it is for a reason, changing something so core to an application would only anger those who have used them for so long. Really, unless you want a riot on your hands you can only really add to Maya or Max, not change fundamentals. I find it hard to believe after 20 years any of the applications would suddenly decide to change there core navigation shortcuts.
EDIT: Oh wait, I just realized your referring to a preset of shortcuts, not actually changing the defaults. Apologies. I can see your point.
whats better about having to use additional buttons for navigation? I can see it being handier when you have to switch between apps all the time but why not opt for 3ds max`s navigation?
Admittedly I haven't used any of the newer Max releases in which the Maya-style navigation is built in, but sure enough for 2009/2010 the Draster NEX plugin was doing a very good job at it, even allowing for shift dragging. So maybe that would be a good starting point in order to put together a list of things to fix ?
They also need to get the brush options working with maya navigation.
Ctrl-Shift-Drag = Brush size
Alt-Sift-Drag = Brush Strength
Neither of these work with Maya nav turned on, this makes using any brush based tools worthless. Paint weights, object scatter, conform brush, brush relax, push pull bla bla bla all worthless because someone didn't bother to think about it.
To get around it you have to set up some kind of rube goldberg contraption to use presets or call up the Brush options dialog which are both way more trouble than they need to be.
