"A transparent, petroleum-derived liquid that is used primarily as a fuel in internal combustion engines."
Gasoline or Petrol.
For some reason I'm reminded of those awful Japanese wrestling tournaments. Coincidentally, Portal 2 has a section involving converting blood to gasoline.
Hey guys, I wanted to say it was a blast reading this thread as we planned things out on our end. The contest is live now. Here's a snippet from the page:
Polycount is extremely happy to announce our latest video game art contest: PETROL/BLOOD, sponsored by Quixel and Marmoset!
The theme of this contest is simple: Participants will create a diorama of a vehicle and its driver* who are competing in a vehicular death-match tournament. Not one, but two beauty images will be required to entry: An in-action shot, a pre-battle pose, or a post-battle pose. Artists must consider the emotional connection a pilot or rider has with their vehicle or beast.
PETROL/BLOOD is a contest designed to focus on the art, tools, techniques, and rendering capabilities of the "next-generation" consoles and PC's. Participants of this contest will be creating artwork for a 'physically-based rendering' (PBR) engine. Both the Quixel Suite and Marmoset's Toolbag 2 are equipped to ensure your entries were created and beautifully showcased with a 'PBR' real-time solution. For duration of this contest only, both sponsors will be making their tools available to all participants of the contest, at no cost. You will be required to use Marmoset's Toolbag 2 when rendering/capturing your beauty images.
Cool, I was hoping for an Environment component to this comp though, maybe next time.
qft
However I am going to make the best of it; I'm teaming up with my Character Artist girlfriend and we're gonna double-team the challenge. Despite not having a dedicated Environment component I'm still excited
The last couple from us have an an environment component to them (the Escape, VG Remix, MINI-GOLF!) so this time around we chose to focus on characters and vehicles.

I can't help but wonder if you'd say this about other specialties/the other way around. Hypothetical example: "The last couple from us have had a character component to them so this time around we chose to focus on environments." Doesn't sound plausible, at the least. I'm not saying this as a complaint; it's mostly curiosity as to why environments are often treated differently in general (and that really is in general, not a targeted observation).
Regardless, I'll likely give it a go. It sounds like a fun challenge and a good way to get me working on something I probably wouldn't tackle otherwise. Even if nothing ends up being a contest entry the theme has given me some fantastic ideas!
Oh, and the asterisk in the sentence that starts "Participants will create a diorama of a vehicle and its driver*" doesn't connect to anything. I'm guessing that it's related to the "doesnt have to just be man-made vehicles" part, but someone might want to fix that one way or the other.

Fair enough, but VG Remix and Mini-Golf were mobile oriented and it seems like there is always a character comp going, whereas not too much comes around that is environment based.
Yeah I like this challenge, environment artists can team up, or make a robot or some sort of non-human driver pretty easily, although it favors character and creature artists a bit, that doesn't define the contest or limits.
Looks like a really fun challenge, but an 8 week deadline sounds pretty rough for this type of thing.
That's a fair reaction, for sure. Though 8 weeks should be plenty of time for people if you plan accordingly.
If the timeline of the contest feels tight to you, try and team up with someone and split the work load. There was a lot of consultation on the deadline and specs of this contest to ensure it doesn't go on for too long, while also ensuring folks can finish what they start.
Twist my arm: We've added 2 weeks to the deadline. Happy arting

Next gen Goat Simulator confirmed.
I'm down.
Twisted Metal? Shit, you guys are killing me.

Perhaps a vehicle or a character that fits that universe?
Or yeah something to do with Unreal Tournament o_O

There's always the "moving castle" route too.
Don't worry, I'll team up with you only to back out 2 weeks in.
