The polycount facebook page has announced that the new "AAA"-focused video game art contest will drop this Saturday!
I, for one, am pretty excited! I love competing but I also love all the awesome art that comes out of them!
I am also intrigued;
This was the quote pasted on the page today
Anyone care to speculate on what they think this means?
I know we'll have all the answers Saturday- but I thought it might be fun to speculate until then =P

Specs: PS4/XB1/Current PC budgets and limitations. Physically based shaders and rendering. Extremely forgiving poly and texture budgets.
Going out on a limb and suggesting this is probably a multiple-character sort of thing.
I squinted. :poly105:
@Swizzle Wow that sounds really likely! I just wonder how environments would really fit in to those specs.... maybe some sort of Death Match arena? That would actually be really cool xD
it sucks because i will be moving next month and wont have internet access most of the month.
here is hoping it lasts for 3+ months...
sigh. :shifty:
(In computer gaming) a mode of play in which the aim is to kill the characters controlled by other players.
So what if the art takes a Death Match type of focus to design...
Hmmm...
What is coming out in the future that is really community based and usually played in Death Match mode......
Anyone see where I am going with this?
Partnership with Epic mayhaps? Building content for UNREAL TOURNAMENT maybe?!?!
Top prizes include guaranteed inclusion into the game?! Cash and stuff!
...one can dream =P
Epic has a pretty strong presence around these parts and there have been strong hints dropped that the contest is going to be very next/current gen. Epic wouldn't be the first company to use PC's contests as a real-life example of their software platform, and it won't be the last if indeed there is a partnership going on.
I don't know if I'll be able to participate given my work schedule, but I'm interested in seeing what comes of it.
That's it im out im not good enough yet + exams
In all serious since my exams are done on Monday if this contest starts on Sunday that means that I can enter if my summer schedule allows it.
Mmmmmm MEAT!
I believe AAA quality refers to the specs like polygon count and texture size. They usually do give us a long enough time to develop, create, and polish- so if you have the drive, I'm sure you can come up with something and have enough time to do make it pretty
Speculation aside, I hope that it is closer to brawl in that there is a built-in concept for the Environment Artists. Brawl was brilliant because people had great designs to work with in the form of 2D fighters- not a lot of designing had to be done; more like adding on top of already solid bases. If that sort of "built-in" design aspect is there, I will be pumped. Needsless to say my design skills are still the worst aspect of my overall (still growing) skill set.
Makes me think it's alluding to the term 'No Holds Barred'. Another fighting contest perhaps?
Oh shit, fair enough haha
More exciting than another fighting game challenge anyways.
takes 4x as much work for a marginally better looking result to make a pandering game designed in a board room that is mostly cutscenes anyway. also giant teams with lots of miscommunication.
so will we be allowed to hire outsourcing?
BLOOD
I would lose MY MIND if that happened.
*Life-Long Hard-Core MK fan here.*
Any idea what this could be a picture of?!
edit: now i see a guy in dark armor/helmet facing left with his arm stretched out to the right holding a pistol.
great definition of AAA ha
you jerks are such teases.
Conjoined twins fighting for who gets to keep the heart when they've split.
GOT IT! :poly142::thumbup:
Team deathmatch now? :P
That's a great point... I forgot about my NCA :C
HALF-LIFE 3 CONFIRMED.
A little birdy told me some rather interesting details about this. I daresay some people are simply going to lose their shit.
I can't wait to get the full scoop.
:poly130:
No worries
......I got nothing.
