A little confession: More than once I abandoned forums I admined because I either lost interest or got overwhelmed by real-life stuff and felt it too awkward to tell the members. I'd like to think I'm more mature than that now but this could be a similar situation.
A lot of people just can't handle being the bearer of bad news so they flake and disappear.
I haven't cared to visit any place other than PC for a long time now. That being said, I am moderately annoyed that a few of my favorite artists happen to use CGHub for their portfolios, and I am now without their work. It doesn't help that any of the few images I did save don't have user/artist names in the file names, on account of CGHub images default saving to "number_max.jpg" or what have you.

Pfft.
That's because you saved the image displayed instead of using the "download" link below the image. The image via this link is (was ?) containing the artist name and the picture name at the original resolution (which was sometimes much bigger that what was displayed on the web page).
Anyway, that's sad to see this website down. I hope it will come back, I discovered a lot of gems on it.
ok this is crap anyone know any other cg art sites that have a decent jobs bored ?
i get all my work from here and cghub it been more from cghub lately (
welp, that's really shitty. I'm curious as to why it was shut down and not handed off especially knowing that so many artists used the site for housing their portfolios. I guess they're all just shit out of luck with no warning. Awesome.
Can't help but feel like if it was for personal reasons, that this was something people were mulling over for some time. Would it really have been that hard to say, "We're closing things down next week. Stuff will be refunded, be sure to back up portfolios & update professional contacts," ?
Losing all of our favorites is going to hurt a lot, and I'm in the same camp regarding a successor to keep the HUB alive... Losing everything in one shot
Seriously. I had a list of about 90 artists I followed because I enjoyed their work. I don't know that list by heart or even know if they had their work posted elsewhere on tumblr or a wordpress. I would have at least liked a heads up so I could have backed up some stuff and saved names, and that's just me LOOKING at stuff. Not to mention all the people that used the site for getting their work critiqued, networking, and portfolio usage. To shut it down overnight is a shitty thing to do with no warning. Completely unprofessional. They should have either handed it off to someone they could trust or give warning. Now it's just gone. Fucking fantastic.
funnily this page only had any users since a few days, why close your website, why close your facebook page, to open up a new one? also the photo seems to be manipulated - really really weird this whole thing
Before you grab your pitch forks, you need to consider there may be very specific reasons it was abruptly pulled down, without warning. Does it suck? Completely. But please, please, please consider anything is possible before throwing hate around. Unfortunately, just as in life, things can happen that are out of anyone's control.
If CGHUB is gone at the snap of a finger, you can rest assured there's a good reason for it and not something they can control.
Are you kidding me?! That's ridiculous, by far the least professional way of going about it.
Wish I hadn't gotten so used to using that favourites system, that's me lost a massive source of reference on there for good. Not to mention the artists I followed or contacts and what not.

This cghub facebook page is fake! was created after the cghub official page desapear.
The text is a copy from from the Shakuro page(the cghub developer.)
I think it would help promote more 2D/3D collaborative projects (Maybe expand for animation too, although I can imagine that community might be a lot smaller. Would be a great way to find people to work on joint DOTA projects with).
Since there is talk of adding another subforum, I figured I'd share my 2 cents:
I used to be a 3D artist, now I am a freelance 2D artist. (illustration/concept art)
One of my wishes since forever has been to have "a polycount" for the 2D entertainment industry. There something about PC that feels right. It feels like a small tight community, even though the site is pretty huge. (just like early days of CA before the very questionable events that went down)
Conceptart was crippled and has been dieing since a long time ago. CGhub now abruptly dissapeared, and facebook (mainly inherited by us freelancers after CA.org) is on a slow decline ever since the changes made to groups etc.
If polycount were to jump on this opportunity full force and expand it to house illustrators and concept artists as well, it has potential to grow a ton. There has been an overarching sense of "having nowhere to go" for a while now, this news just doubled that feeling.
if the page is fake, how is the news official? Does anyone have any official confirmation? I think Intervain was a mod over there. I wish there was just a better source for this news.

This is a great post, thanks for sharing it. Would a 2D forum be enough to scratch that itch? I reckon you'd like us to completely adopt the 2D medium, which we could (and should). Recaps, contests, you name it.

Thank you for responding. That would be simply amazing. Just a subforum would be the bees knees, but having the full support might be what is needed to really make people go "this is the new place where the cool kids hang out"
The next step is just communicating it to the stray artists spread over twitter, concept art and facebook. (edit: Also noteworthy is this place is already filled with insane painters, so that works well too. I don't know many 3D artists who aren't great painters as well - it's nuts.)
An issue I see with this now - and really with the site overall - is in its current form, its hard to find art and artists. The new site will fix a lot of this, but folks who are use to CGHUB's level of artist exposure may find Polycount, for now, disappointing in that regard.
Take it for what it's worth , but ...
If you feel the new site would help to better serve the expectations of those artists - That may be a good reason to hold off from any hacked in solutions, for now.
People will find there way here eventually , when when a new alternative is presented.

Thoughts?
Polycount is getting a revamp? I think the forum format might be a bit difficult for displaying 2D art as well as cghub.
I wonder if this has anything to do with Feng Zhu's recent launch of drawcrowd.

I could do that today. Would it help?

Edit:: As Roostermap mentioned... A gallery system would be ideal
