How to change forum's theme

Quick question.
Any way to change the forum's black theme, it's seriously giving me a headache.
And to answer the inevitable pending question on why i don't agree with the black theme:

- Personal preference, and the green text and the headache.

Thanks guys :poly121:

Perhaps your monitor brightness & contrast are not set correctly? The dark green on medium-dark gray is actually very relaxing to eyes.

That may be, but i still prefer white/classic over black.
A professional forum like this, surely must have different themes to please the majority of it's users?

    Regarding the monitor :
    Dell Ultrasharp pre-color corrected.

If they ever do add an optional theme it better be this.

So there isn't any option to change the theme after all, pretty disappointing.
That's ok though, i can always replace my eyeballs when they wear out.
Plus, a forum this broad, must be some tutorials on how to model me a fresh pair if everything else fails.

    Thanks for the help guys.

You could look into browser extensions like Stylebot that allow you to customize the css to your liking.

Was not aware of Stylebot, check it out, 5 mins of editing :

Of course, it's far from perfect, but personally i like it better now.

Look, I've tried, but i just cant accommodate to a dark theme, it's too distracting and very hard to distinguishing anything.

Edit : And there are as many studies in favor of black over white as there are on white over black, and most of them are aimed at people with dyslexia or photophobia.
I'm just going with whatever works best for me.

Hehe Gir - I think it's generally best to *not* dismiss a request like that, especially when it comes from someone who took the time to go in and manually edit the CSS code to show us what the desired feature could look like.
In other words ... telling someone "nah, you don't need that" sounds a lot like the stuff one can read on the Apple fanboy forums out there :)

(unless you were just being sarcastic here and it totally went over my head !)

OP : I agree that a choice in themes would be great, since not all screens (and users !) are the same. I actually believe there used to be an option like that somewhere but it might be unavailable now.

Possible changes to the forums have been brought up here before in very open-minded discussions ; you might want to contact username "adam" about this feature, as he is one of the main moderators here.

Thank you for bringing that up !

I think it's a bit overkill to suggest something like that to "adam", especially since it seems I'm the only one who doesn't like the black theme. I'd rather not be the one to bring about a revolution to polycount.
Perhaps not many people care about the forum theme, ergo the lack of options.

The majority of applications I use (3ds max, photoshop, zbrush, cryengine) have a black and dark grey theme. When I go to a website that's all bright I nearly go blind. I love polycount's theme, fits in snugly.

You definitely need to look at your calibration, there's very little black on the forum.

Also, the PC admin team deliberated over this with some limited input from the entire forum a long time ago. You cheeky fuck.

I think there used to be a CSS selector dropdown when this new site first got rolling. Seems to be long gone now.

Good on ya for changing it up to meet your needs though. Obviously a lot of us like the light on dark, but doesn't mean its universal.

Don't worry about insults. Just means they like you. If you start getting cat pics for responses, that's a sign of trouble.

Not a bad freaking idea at all, espeically since it saves any of the owners from doing it themselves.

Also the insults only start coming when you start seeing cats in the thread.
    :poly142:

But your messing with a theme where most of the community members pretty much has made the forum their home for over 5 years so just be cool and we'll be cool, we are all silly bastards here i think.

Some of us are unpredictable though also that cheeky comment could be an upbringing thing not meant to be offensive, translation = smart guy ? idk.

I am aware that most people would rather have brain surgery than have their interface rearranged or re-colored, I am one of those people, and it's probably one of the reasons i like bright themes better. But as I've stated before, it's just a personal preference not one to ridicule the current layout. Glad to see most of the members are open-minded about it, and you know, a professional like you all seem to be, could probably do better re-designing the theme. More options is always better than less, yet not mandatory.

While we're on the topic of themes, does it annoy anyone else that the "userfield_edit" icon images are broken on the control panel page, I hardly ever go in there, but it gnaws at the OCD side of me.

I'd just like the polycount theme to closer resemble the default themes of something like Jira or fogbugz.

Bah, i already know I'm fighting a loosing battle, most forums nowadays are bias when it comes to interface or color choices, they just think all users share the same tastes.

And for the last time, it's not my calibration or monitor, I'm looking at a $800 professional equipment here (excuse the brag) it is factory calibrated to perfection.

And to the people who say there is very little black in the theme.
    - Mates, i think you have been staring so long at it that you are practically immune or blind to black by now.
[side note] - Professional help may be required if you can't tell between black and white, racism aside, we are artists and that ability is required in this industry.
In case you can't tell, this is me fighting the insurgency -- *takes a courteous bow.

It's a dark theme but there's almost no black, averaged it's a 25% gray theme. I used to have to calibrate all the production monitors at a newspaper office, they were calibrated to the light levels in the room taken from a light meter.

Most art game studios are pretty dark, that's probably why everyone prefers the dark theme. If you're in a brightly lit area then you'll want a brighter theme.

Ok, I'll pretend that I'm the only one who read "Color Theory" and does not know that gray is just another black.

Can i calibrate my monitor far enough that it starts looking like that screenshot i posted? That's the only case i see where calibration would come into play.

So based on a number of posts above it seems I'm not the only one who thinks lighter themes are a good option.

Needlessly antagonistic. Don't be that new guy that comes in and pisses off everybody in the forum. Color Theory is one of those topics we spend our whole careers mastering.

correct, a bright theme in a dark office is headache inducing. Most game studios are dark.

I think he was right, but i am not immune to the blackness.

I fear purchasing a spyderelite i think i won't even see a difference and all those bad stories of SE not working "perfectly", uhg, decisions decisions, would purchasing a new Monitor defeat the purpose?

Since we are on the monitor and scheme conversation along with color theory let's make use of this thread. ;)

Dark themes are a nightmare to read and no they aren't better for eyes what utter bs. Look at readability Instapaper and any other reading plugins non use green on black what is this the eighties.
Please at least offer an alternative especially for tablets which tiny enough to start with.
Btw I can barely what I am writing so forgive the typos. Dark themes are okay at night low light but otherwise terrible.

I had trouble with my eyes a while back and was the opposite of the op, in that I couldnt take bright themes so I installed this:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/colorific-1/

    Works great in firefox

As far as themes go I find the dark themes a bit dated and somewhat claustrophobic. My favorite forum theme is the Truefire one I am a member of: http://truefire.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?6-Forum-Welcome-Center they just renewed the forum. Their work areas are a mix of light greys and the default size of the pages ( Cntrl + 0 ) are not that microscript we all suffered in the days of trendy flash sites and the webfonts revolution :)

But everyone to his own I say

if you have problemes with looking at monitors in general, i recently installed flux
and at sunset it warms up the monitor color and reduces harmful blue light, feels really
comfortable for working, although the default settings are too strong

    https://justgetflux.com/

If you turn it off at night, you really notice the difference and how harsh the default monitor
    light is to the eyes

Also dont forget everyone percieves colors a little differently as eyes are not equal, and monitors the same, calibrated or not
