Just imagine: a from-scratch, game-art focused application. No extensive animation options (just enough for games), no FX and simulation, no rendering other than GPU-baking, material system is purely focused on realtime viewing. Proper modeling tools to support High-to-low modeling, easy management of what objects to export. Python-only scripting capabilities on a very powerful interface (everything exposed), no compiled plugins that fail after new releases.
Just imagine...
There is one such application on market, that makes most of requirment. Just almost noone is using it ;p.
Of course there might be someone who will try to make such up. Maybe Kickstarter cmpaing ? ;p.
I would be very happy if AD killed off max. For sole reason to see how much it would piss off max users, and to show off how much managment of AD is detached from reality.
And yet when the Gameware team attempts to do this with Maya LT with the exception of from scratch people go crazy.
Maybe because Maya LT is stripped down Maya ?
Honestly the issue with Maya that I have is modeling. It is awful, and I would never use for more complex with that barrel. I tried, it just doesn't tick.
I could switch from max to modo in one day. From max to maya I tried for week, and after creating single Stormsword model I gave up. I have spend more time fighting modeling, than modeling.

What program fits those requirements?
Also, as a Maya user, I tried to learn Max, and had the same issues you have. They're very different ways of thinking about modelling, and as a result, I feel absolutely suffocated in Max. Just not for you, and Max isn't for me.
The reseller took the page down. Maybe because its not official by autodesk and they are not allowed to publish it at the moment. But yeah, this is really sad. If its 100% true, I would really miss ICE and the intuitive user interface
There still some info up. A little bit of googling brings it up, and it's sad to read really.
"Buy subscriptions", they said !
Now it's actually going to be quite interesting once they just drop support altogether. Wouldn't it be cool if the community took ownership of the program in it's "final" abandonware state, optimizing it, rewriting dlls, adding features, and so on ... Who knows !

He's talking about that one ^. Although Blender really is underrated, it doesn't have all of those features yet. It's getting close though. In the way of optimization, bloat, its interface, and python scripting, it's amazing.
I was waiting to see how long it would be until someone mentioned Blender in this thread.
I think in general we're still clinging to old, established ideas of how 3D DCC apps should work and behave. Blender probably does some/a lot of stuff right, but it's not dramatically different from Max or Maya in the end.
I'm talking about stuff where all your actions are non-destructive, where users aren't tasked with all that useless manual labor like doing lowpoly or unfolding and unwrapping every single poly. Where there is no arbitrary separation between what you see in the viewport and what you 'render' on CPU. Where there is no limiting, legacy-based API layer for python (like PyMel), but anything the editor can do is exposed to Python.
I've said it before and you might get tired of it, but it's like how Substance Designer and Painter (and kind of the new DDo too in a more subtle way) so radically, dramatically depart from existing ways to texture, and really set a new standard. Or how Zbrush was such a gamechanger when it first came out. I'd like to see that happen for our 'meat-and-potatos' 3D applications.
I started on Softimage so I have some nostalgia for it. Max was my second app and I found the learning curve eased me into game art. I had to learn Maya for a job and realized that Max was doing things the hard, old-school way. I now work with Blender for my projects and its a beast under the hood.
In would like to see 3smax get maya in a headlock and shake it about a bit.
Then they make friends, get together and go do a drive by on blender:)
maybe they call at blenders house and throw softimages rotting corpse on to the driveway as a warning first.

...while snobby Modo arrogantly looks down at all of them in disgust, believing its the best
I heard a rumor that they killed the XSI off Softimage years ago cause some developer at Siggraph pronounced XSI as 'ecstasy'. As in 'I love XSI, we use it all the time. We continue to sell XSI.' ETC ETC.
All I know is the XSI wasn't around much longer after and it was just Softimage. I tried finding a video of it but the youtoobs failed me.
I would be very happy if AD killed off max. For sole reason to see how much it would piss off max users, and to show off how much managment of AD is detached from reality.
I think this drives a lot of the shut down rumors. It's going on 11 years since I was first told that Max had no future.
Because it is open source, some of the biggest publishers won't use it. One has explicitly blocked its use by developers in the past.
Why would a company disallow the use of a particular program just because it's open source? If anything TAs have total access to the program to really smooth out the pipeline.
I hope this isn't the case as Softimage remains my tool of choice. However, I feel they've been killing it for several years now. The price has gone up by $2000 since they killed the foundation version, and they haven't exactly added any new features to support that.
That wont happen, theres no way such applications can get that simplified in their UI, but that doesnt mean it wont be streamlined and polished. Thats technically what is happening right now. The author of that image is currently on the new UI team, and he played a role in the 2.5 UI shift.
Modo is worth switching to. Pretty sure its only going to get more popular as time goes on.
Pretty much what most will be doing I expect, along with other non-autodesk programs. This will be the final nail in the coffin for most XSI users.
How can you trust a company like this? Sure migrate from Softimage to Max and then they'll probably nuke Max in a couple of years.
You can see all the focus is going into Maya, so it's probably what you should be learning if you don't already know it.
Modo is worth switching to. Pretty sure its only going to get more popular as time goes on.
I agree. I think that MeshFusion is going to be the ice breaker that allows Modo to make huge inroads where it wasn't able to before. Nobody else has anything like that.
2014 should be big for Modo! And it's a great app, obviously, so give it a shot.

Exactly, the trust factor has just gotten worse with Autodesk. After switching to Modo, I have talked to the staff on Steam, even seen them play games like CS:Go with the user base. Hell, Brad Peebler has rap songs about Modo: http://content.luxology.com/modo/modcast/rGod.mp4
Who does this!?! Its for lack of a better word, Awesome! The trust factor is strong on the Modo side.
Modo is already owned by The Foundry. I doubt Autodesk will buy The Foundry.
Just like they didn't buy Pixologic yet.
I think if they could they would buy Pixologic in heartbeat.
Though, who knows. I still wonder why Autodesk was able to buy XSI. Does Softimage managment gone greed-mad and when they saw tens of milions dollars, they just "holy shit, we are going to be rich!", or Softimage financial condition was so bad in first place that they "oh god, we will take first buy offer we can..".
And how this didn't end up in court ?
If Autodeks was EU compnany they would probably be in court by the time they tried to buy XSI. For sole reason that they tried to monopolize 3d app market.
Softimage was a subsidy of microsoft, which was eventualy sold to Avid tech... so anythings possible.
It blows me away how good Softimage had it... They used that program for VFX in Jurassic Park, Titanic and The Fifth Element... and xsi was used by leading media and entertainment companies, including Digital Domain, Ubisoft, SEGA Corporation, CAPCOM, Animal Logic and The Mill.
I have no idea what had to have happened that they needed to sell off to Autodesk.
That being said, my initial comment was just to poke a little fun at the shituation. XSI was my fav program to animate with back in the day...
This is quite sad. Although I am a Maya and 3dsmax user, I feel the pain. shame on Autodesk. I was working at a VFX house that uses Softimage and Maya, They made the decision to switch to full Maya now.

Pretty much Avid wanted rid of it and Autodesk was there to pick up for a tidy sum than what it should have gone for, just to keep it away from competitors.
If Dassalut had gotten it, it would have been competition for Autodesk for to do some work.
I'm not sure where the hate against Maya comes from. I'm a Max user, and always have been, but I have no problems admitting that Maya is significantly more powerful for many things. Max is absolutely terrible for managing large scenes, Maya on the other hand...
Clearly, most of you have never animated in Maya before either.
Well I guess it's time to switch to Modo. Haven't used anything besides Max, Maya, and a little bit of Cinema 4D so I'm hoping the transition isn't difficult. That meshfusion plug-in alone looks like it'll make the switch worth the effort though.
Why would a company disallow the use of a particular program just because it's open source? If anything TAs have total access to the program to really smooth out the pipeline.
The publisher demanded it and put it in the contract. The developer had to stick to the contract. It also included plugins and scripts. The publisher claimed it would create liabilities. Can't say much more than that.

It sounds like "we have no idea what we are talking about, but we are paying you, so you do it our way!".
Couldn't you have used a different site for that petition?? Change.org is meant for social change. Not for a petition to save a corporate program. Such ludicrous petitions cheapen the site. It would be like making one on Whitehouse.gov asking Obama to save Softimage (watch some smartsss go do it now).
Softimage|3D was the first software I really dove into. I can still see it's UI. I haven't used XSI extensively for a long time, but they seemed to really innovate.
Although this doesn't impact my current pipeline/workflow, I can't help, but feel a bit sad at this news. It's like seeing a favorite band from your youth die.
We regret to inform you that the upcoming 2015 release will be the last one for Softimage® software. This final version is expected to ship on or around April 14, 2014. Autodesk will continue to offer product support until April 30, 2016. We will also provide Softimage support services (including Hot Fixes and Service Packs) to all Softimage customers with Autodesk Subscription, at no cost, until April 30, 2016.
