3ds Max mParticles query (please help)

I'm using mParticles to try and create a title sequence, the letters of which burn into paper and flake away in a soft wind.

So I've started building this with the letters all fragmented and chosen within a mP Flow Birth Group system and everything works like I expect it to - except I can't seem to find a way to control the initial birth-rate of the fragments (particles). Ideally I want the fragments to have resistance, maybe flicker a little and then randomly release to float away.

I've looked at Drag and Speed operators but neither seem to be the solution.

FYI I'm pretty inexperienced with particles in general - though I have used them on occasion. Any help is massively appreciated! :thumbup:
