Hey guys! Just working on this Mecha Raptor, i used some designs from various cartoons/movies, one especially Digimon (Metal Greymon). It's still at its early stages of Texturing but still open to suggestions. Thanks
haha thanks KazeoHin that's actually very interesting, when i was looking for raptor references I did wonder why there were some raptors with feathers. Going to research more about that... Thanks again!
Yes, The whole feathers thing is something I'm quite passionate about, as the lack of feathers presented on (now known) feathered dinosaurs kind-of helps the trend of evolutionary ignorance spread.
This is art, though so I am fully aware that this is meant to be more artistic than scientifically accurate: I'm pretty sure velociraptors did not have access to missile launchers and kevlar body-armour. So like I said, it is still quite awesome!
you seem to have a good skill with modelling dinosaurs. just remember, that most late-era dinosaurs most likely looked more like this:
Thanks CarlK3D,DeviatePanda,looprix, I had to google "Nanosaur" and I do see the resemblance but it was coincidence and i think might change the color scheme since I was actually going to go with that Tiger Stripe on the back of the raptor. So far the metal has been a cool contrast to the skin just fiddling around with different shades of grays for the metal lol
Thanks again KazeoHin and for the references,I do agree with you and fascinating to see birds like ostriches, Emus and turkeys with closely related skeleton structure with the Velociraptor but without the reptiley skin. Pretty cool stuff and i'll keep the progress posted
here's an update on the raptor skin texture. I played around with different colors and this was the best suited I could come up with that goes well with the metal Armour. I had a hard time finding good Raptor skin references to use so I just hand painted it all instead using polypaint on Zbrush. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!
The skin is definitely more realistic, however, he looks a bit too wide. The armour must have hidden the dimensions before, but without it he looks quite stout. Most, if not all theropod dinosaurs are tall and thin, with a very flat front-on silhouette.
its worth a look at the skeletal structure to see that their ribcage was nearly two times taller than it was wide, and it was two times longer than it was tall.
also, on us humans, our spine attaches on the bottom of our skull. we are nearly unique in this sense. nearly all other animals have spines that attach on the back of their skull. remember this when modelling.
well the reference is definitely a jurassic park raptor, which is not a velociraptor at all, despite them calling it this in the movie. it is more of a deinonychus, which was much bigger and also more massive - still the ribcage looks too wide. but i can't find proper reference right now
Big thanks everyone for the help and especially KazeoHin who has helped since I started this thread, I hope you never stop helping lol
I made the mistake of using a lot of side view raptor references as you can tell Also I did use A LOT of Jurassic Park references which turns out to be a Utahraptor. Thanks for clearing that out, Amber.
The Utahraptor appears to be the only 1 out of the 3 that can carry all that mech Armour and weapons. I have to do my own tweaking on the rib-cage and making him thinner.
Sorta off topic but it's amazing to see how that studio made worked on the raptors, I had no clue there was a person wearing a costume. I Always thought they were 100% animatronics like the T-rex. I love to see old sfx being made so thanks for sharing that, Neox.
Hey guys i'm back again, I know it's been a month since I last posted something so my apologies. I struggled a lot with the UV mapping of the metal parts but I got it done so I'm really glad it's behind me.
As for the textures I used DDo2 for the metal parts which went by faster then I expected and finally rendered it in Marmoset toolbag so I hope you guys like it. Thanks!
The biggest problem is the metal look very flat. There is no wear or differentiation of types of metal. There should be wear on the edges of thing and where the most use happens. There also would be multiple types of metal. I have never seen a mechanical object without different material types throughout.
Also the raptor has no material definition whatsoever. You really should think about the different levels of specularity and glossiness on the different parts of the raptor.

Though, all of modern discoveries point to Roptor-like dinosaurs were most-likely feathered, and densely feathered.
However, I like your idea and it kicks-ass in a Turok sort of way.

than this:
but, Nonetheless, your raptor looks awesome.

and probably the closest thing alive today to a velociraptor (complete with one big toe-claw)

also: by today's understanding of taxonomy and biological evolution: Birds are classified as 'Avian Dinosaurs', thus making Dinosaurs not extinct.
Maybe the metal can be cool to contrast the skin??

To me, it looks like their hips are almost as narrow as a humans, so I'd imagine their thighs would almost touch like ours as well.
so if the reference is the JP raptor
this might help regarding how wide he should be
they had to be this wide (and well huge) as they have been moved by people inside them.

As an FYI, the Jurassic Park movie raptor is a tweaked Utahraptor - you can see it in the shape of the creature quite easily.

Bump up the reflection map and add variations in the microsurface map.

@JoshuaG I also need to give him a wig haha

Excellent work, but I think the metal in the current version could use some more scratches.
I figured I have to actually put scratches through the normal's, I thought I could get away with doing it in only in Diffuse but no success.
