I'm using the snakehook brush to pull out strings of geometry but I can't make a nice curly spiral-like shape. Any suggestions?

CurveTubes, zSpheres, ShadowBox. There are tons of tools at your disposal. Play around with them and find out which works the best.

There's a spiral brush, but it has other uses in mind and very likely wont give you the result you're looking for.
Since you're pulling and dynameshing, my own money would be on the curvetubes brush; its very quick and easy.
