I am planning to create something similar to the scene below, but am not sure where to start. I took this photo, among others, on a hike the other day and was inspired by the fall/winter feel of it. It's on a small mountain ridge in northern NJ:

I would like to be able to create scenes like this efficiently. My goal is to work for a game studio creating natural environments (with man-made elements, but I have experience with that already).
Some more specific questions:
What are the most preferred ways of quickly creating trees/forests? I know Onyx, but that's about it.
Terrain - Displacement map or sculpted geometry?
Creating/painting dead leaves or pebbles on the ground. Any links to a preferred method?
I am basically looking for the most efficient and quick ways to create scenes like this. I would like to have a library of scenes for me to drop man-made structures into and run nicely in a game engine. Any advice would be appreciated. Also, links to paid tutorials are not a problem. Thank you.

How about tree creation?
Also I have an Intuos Wacom tablet, if that helps.
I realize a lot of these can be found through the wiki, but I was wondering if there are any newer/more efficient methods.
