I think it looks really well done. I have two critiques, both of which have to do with the illusion of motion. The first is there is no dust kick up following the pod racer. I see some particles in the air but it looks like basic dust in the air of the canyon. There should be quite a bit of particles in the wake of this thing, right?
The second is the pod looks as if it is floating. I think it may be because of the way the hoses are modeled leading from the engines to the pod. If something were moving at a high speed and being drawn from the front, those hoses should be taut. Right now it looks as if the engines slowed down or stopped and the pod is catching up to it. It's like a boat pulling a water skier.
By all means, this scene looks amazing, though. Those are just my critiques.
I completely agree with Praetus, there is no dust kickup, it really looks like the podracer was just placed there and frozen. I think that adding a sense of motion would really add to the scene, such as a subtle hint of motion blur. Think about it as a photographer who is hiding in the rocks and snapping the photo. At the speed those podracers go, there will be some kind of motion blur, either blurring the background, or the tips of the racer itself. Right now everything just feels too sharp, and does not feel dynamic.
I know its probably too late for this, but I thought I'd point it out anyway; the rocks could use some loving as well. The high-frequency noise feels a bit too uniform, and slapped on over a blobby surface. There is no middle ground between the large shapes and the surface noise.
Now that the criticism is out of the way, I'm really loving what you've got going there! You really nailed the color palette properly, feels like it is taken straight out from Star Wars Episode 1. The materials read properly, the sand feels right, and you've got a good atmosphere going. I few more tweaks and you've got yourself a kickass piece.
Awesome guys great critique I always planned on adding that stuff but I just never got round to it! I shall add some motion blur to the pod and some dust kickuo and then update the shots.
Yer I get the comment on the rock noise as well, I just slapped a tiileable texture over it and I really wanted to mask between a couple but didn't have time it might be better tot just reduce it thought. So I mess about with it. I try and make the changes and update it later today,
I have update the shots with a more kickoff and dust coming off the pod and motion blur on the pod to give it a sense of movement, let me know what you think
Hey, I just stumbled upon this. I have to say that this looks incredible. I used to play EPISODE 1 Racer on N64 when I was a kid. I just recently bought it for my PC. I forgot how awesome it is to play. Also just as a heads up in case you haven't heard yet but since Disney bought all of the rights they are shutting down any outside fan projects. So I would keep this under wraps until its completely finished and have backup files.

Cheers again for the critique super helpful
Here is the Podracer breakdown PDF that you were requesting I hope you find this useful

@Rumkugel: What Podracers did you build?
Glad you all liked the breakdown!
wan sandage was in the making.
old stuff tho like from 2008...
Gathering references on the other "non-hero" pods was pain in the ass, as even the movie props were different from the actual 3d model..
Keep going, your work is extremely powerful!
