Sounds like you've scratch the outer layer of protective plastic. I'm pretty sure that the screen cleaning/repair kits just polish the surface to make scratches less visable. Get a bottle of the stuff thats advertised as LCD cleaner and one of those micro fibre cleaning cloths, it should buff out.
And those things are a sealed unit. The plastic outer layer is probably bonded directly to the lcd glass.
I fixed the issue to make them less "visable" using toothpaste.
I find it is good for now, as I don't notice it unless I think about looking for it.

vaseline is better, as its a more transparent material.

I would just live with it.
Its just the outer plastic that protects them.
I guessing its the plastic sheet over the the pixels to protect them?
