Of course its possible:
-Soften all edges
-In Lowpoly mode select all edges of your object, and harden them
-Mesh->Smooth, with Propagate Edge Hardness ON and Preserve Hard Edges OFF
-Toon ->Assign Outline -> Add new Toon Outline
-On the Toon node, set the Profile Line Width to 0, Under Crease Lines Crease break angle, min angle, and max angle all to 0,
-Render in Maya Software
I don't think that's what he was asking antweiler, but that is an interesting way to get a wireframs of the smoothed cage over the mesh. I read the question as wanting to be able to push 3 and then render the smooth preview in Maya Software, which you can't do without actually dividing the mesh. Or I could be wrong.
@rube You are right, I did exactly what you said by adding a smooth to the mesh it renders, I was worried about breaking my vertex weights by doing that but so far nothing bad happened.
