Hey guys
Trying to work on my highpoly modeling skills (which are terrible atm)
Ive choosen one of gamesworkshops super awesome models, originally
a Baneblade Imperial Guard super heavy tank, but I will do a so-common fan conversion.
Here is the main reference:

Im not following it directly, ill take a couple custom things here and there, (but mainly from fan conversions as reference, the turret I modeled per example is a custom you can get on ebay)
Update
All materials are procedurial and use tiling 1k textues. Bump, Specular, Diffuse, Reflection , Normal , Luminance , Transparency and Alpha channels so far, maybe displacement later , mats need a lot of work still (For the red ones, the grey pics are simple editor grabs)
I wont be doing a lowpoly, It will be a offline render as artwork with heavy photoshopping (a battle scene probably) maybe even a promotional thing for a fake game.
Ill try doing one piece of the tank each 1-2 days, and I hope remaining this thread keeps me motivated for such a big project ; )

So much material work and its still not right..
Got a highlighting / concavity shader running now, and some tricky things with gradients and alpha to make the barrels look hot, but needs more work
Are the procedural maps for the shader done in Max?
Also plugging the red for the barrels in the self illumination might sell the effect a bit more (or i'm an idiot and you're of course already doing this)... It doesn't look hot cause it's getting the too much shadows and even specular reflections : /
keep it up! subbing
If a barrel actually begins to glow, then the entire barrel will glow a dull orange or red. This sight has the best images I've found so far http://www.huntingclub.com/blogs/articletype/articleview/articleid/14042/youve-never-seen-a-barrel-get-this-hot. This took 1,500 rounds of tracer ammunition fired in an almost continuous burst and resulted in a visible deformation of the barrel. The flames at the very end of the video were a nice touch...
Fun Fact: You could usually spot the M60 gunners during training by the bandages on their left hands...
Worked on the side hull, no special detail yet, that will come last Pushed the glowing barrel a bit but not perfect yet
Looks like my porportions are off for the turrets, a bunch too small
Improved the glowing barrels a bit but it needs more work still, thanks for the info guys ; )
Its coming along, my PCs are at their limit right now, gonna get really hard later on >.>
Gotta need a new rig anyways, my Laptop is faster than my Desktop due to hyperthreading with a i7
Side Turrets are still too small
Gotta add all the small detail stuff now to make it look good, and god the bolts, so many bolts ... redoing the old ones aswell
Need to fix porportions aswell at some places, not as easy as I thought ..
Pic on top
I plan a composition of 2 tanks, one where you only see the side and one frontal as focal, since I only take one pic, I want to show off the side atleast somehow. Planned some tricky things with multiple passes with multiple materials for metal and dirt, and different light passes with a low-key probably and blending them after
Composition will be something like this
