im still new to making textures but i really hope this shows the effort i put into making it.
here is just the texture in 512x512
here is it tiled a few times
i hope i didn't try and cram too much into the 520 was trying to avoid it looking tiled but there is that 1 larger stone that gives it away.
ug after starting to work in this area i have been noticing tiling and seams on textures faster and quicker and it's getting on my nerves.

Don't get too attached. As said, you need to bring in some highlights and shadows. It looks really flat at the moment. Have a look at some real photos and see how the lights working.
ohhh no it looks terrible...
Open other one. ahhh i feel better.
it defiantly could use more depth to it. not to dark though as well as it will start to become a very dark texture quick. only way to truly know where its right is to go to far and then find a good in between.

hmmm i used the darker blue on the cracks and a light yellow that looks a bit like cream. was trying to get a colour contrast to help the bricks pop out a bit more. i also went over the edge with a lighter colour and then smudged it a little. shouldn't be hard to see which brick. does this make it stand out nicely or should i try another approach? should i change the highlight colour on the brick as well (the yellow cream colour)? im really not sure what to do.
Tutorial from one of the Torchlight artists. Use it to abandon!
plus this was already posted in here by Obscura.
That should also help a lot Loki, mixed with the tut Jade posted should get the ball rolling very nicely for you!
just bare in mind that even this can be barely considered as a sketch. there is much work to be done before the final.
to me, your problem seems to be lack of understanding what it is you painting. find some references.
spent ages doing this and now i feel like the only thing i can re use out of this texture is the stone layout pattern because i should start again.

also is there an easy way to offset the whole group because i etheir end up megring all the layers or off setting each layer individually.
Stop using those thick black lines between the stones, look at linovs paintover. They are thinner, more irregular and darkgrey. Do some highlights on the edge of the stones. Think more about gradiens...
Take a look at other artists handpainted texture stuff! You'll learn from that.
I still haven't found a way around it
I just offset one, then quickly go down my layers hitting CTRL+F on each one. It repeats your last filter. I remember finding a script for it once somewhere but it quickly stopped working for whatever reason.
oh and snafubar7 yeah that's what i have been doing. would be cool if you could offset an entire group of layers together.
I made this quick paint-over on your texture as I find it hard to give feedback with only words. I hope the text isnt to hard to read
Don't be sad. Fight!
And maybe... in a while you could be the one who's doing brilliant paintovers ;D
caswell what did you use to add the lighting on your paint over?
throw away that youtube stuff
you pick lighter tone and you paint it by hand. with your photoshop brush. this is why its called hand painted. same for shadows.
playing with blending modes will only get you so far. its good for website buttons and art school teachers who doesn't know shit after 15 years in the industy.
read this: http://androidarts.com/art_tut.htm
there is no magic button to make art for you.
Take a look at this:

Since you are a beginner.. my advice: pick one of these and copy the colour palette, study where they are putting their highlights/shadow, how thick their lines are, the depth, etc and do something similar without making a carbon copy of it.
Whabam:
So.. some of these are obviously more successful than others.. why is that? When you start ripping apart their work, you can use that critique to fuel your own.
I added some brighter highlight on the top and some darker shade, just a slight color difference, that will help already.
And the light in the scratch was wrong, the light is always hitting the face facing it, so, do it the other way around ;D
thanks for the help and yeah that scratch that i put it was just to try a thinner base and i probably should of had it going with the rest of the stuff.
anyway i will give this a shot soon and then maybe i will move onto another type of marital. probably wood. sometimes i learn stuff when i actually stop working on it. i have crammed a bit too much in i think and it needs time to sink in before i can actually use most of the information and skills that i have been shown.(does anyone else get this?)
