advanced character creation/animation

So i've been trying to figure out how people make such detailed characters and animate them. My thinking is that a character has to be one solid object? I work in cinema 4d but any and all tutorial would be awesome. As you can tell i'm kinda lost right now.

for example http://youtu.be/EtpPS4oQ76o.
obviously that is really advanced but that would be the end goal.

to be honest there arent many rules set in stone these days.

Getting a character or object to be animatable can definately be an art in its self but for a general setup heres some tips:

A character can be made up of many 3d meshes or a single mesh.
If your goal is to just animate and not have it working in a game it becomes even easier as you can use every tool in your package all that matters is the render.

Likewise if you are aiming to get something into an engine, fear not, most popular game/engines already have good to go setups for most packages, just use those, either hide/delete the mesh model and replace with your own for a easy starting point.

And as always, something easy to do is never really worth while doing, getting a character youve made into a game and animated is a thoroughly rewarding task. Keep at it and best of luck!
