I've been feeling a bit out of it creatively and artistically lately, so I wanted to give myself a goal and some personal projects to push myself. Step one was to finish my website (which i did! www.maurymountain.com), second step is to get started making some shit!
1. Cannot be a singular object. ex: a fire hydrant alone = no, a fire hydrant with an octopus coming out of it w/ a curb scene = yes.
2. The piece/topic needs to be fun to make.
Chances are I may go overboard with a few, but I don't care! I want to push my art further, push style, different techniques, technical knowledge, speed, story telling, character, and creativity! I will most likely fail in a few of the areas i want to push frequently, but that is the point of doing this - to fail and learn from the failures.
not a substantial update, got another 2 hrs in last night. about ready to start texturing, just a few more details to hit on the floating earth bit, rocks, extra roots.
I like the concept, I've always been a fan of the rough and dirty sketch. It's so much more interesting to look at. Do you think any of that will carry over once it's in 3d?
thanks gannon, i had fun doing it! I wanted to quickly get the idea out, and didn't want to waste too much time trying to solve problems in the concept phase. I don't think I'll be as sketchy in the final textured version, but am going to try to keep it somewhat loose. A personal goal for this piece is to not use any pure black on any texture.
I could try with some alpha edges and more loose gestural stuff to keep some of the concept's feel, but i mainly just wanted to get the idea out quick so i could move onto making it in 3d, and texturing it.
its an interesting idea, ill try some stuff out when i get to texturing.
rollin: woo thx! ya excited to be too!
baj: thanks! will probably do a mix of photoshop, projection, and 3d painting (deep paint).
another model update, another few hours tonight. Going to start texturing, will revisit the faerie-butterfly later, still need to do some cleanup, and finish that mesh. Need to start figuring out the texturing and optimizing more!
Have you tried viewport canvas in max? A bit clunky but I loved using it a while back for painted diffuse stuff whilst being able to model and quickly make changes.

I really like the shading style you have.
Also I figured out a small story from looking at the image a bit closer, which means it reads very well.
blocking out stuffs
