Mudbox: Vertex spike artifact

I'm experiencing an issue where a vertex in my model is spiking out from the mesh. When I turn off the sculpt layers and smooth the vertex on the base mesh it will go away, but when I turn the sculpt layers back on it reappears. If I try and smooth the vertex in a sculpt layer Mudbox crashes. Anyone know a workaround?

sometimes files go bad, get corrupt etc. instead of trying to figure it out what i do is just start a new file and rebuild with clean geometry from the old file. so what i would do in your case is this...

    1) export your objects on the lowest and highest level as obj's.

    2) import your set of low obj's into a new file.

    3) subdivide your low objects to the same level as you high.

    4) import your high as a layer onto all your low objects.

    5) flatten your layers.

you can use this technique to transfer layer detail etc.

    MM polycounter lvl 17
    try

    1. exporting level 0

    2. start new scene, import the level 0 and subdivide it to the same amount of level your highest level was in original scene and export that.

    3. go back to your original scene, now import as layer the highest lvl from step 2. make sure you are in highest level so import as layer works properly.

4, now mask out all areas in that layer that is not affected by the vertex problem.

    5. flatten layers, and tangent mirror if needed.
