I have some exr files I need to compress down into 8 bit, specifically normal maps. In 3dsmax, in the preview window, they display correctly as a bitmap.
However in photoshop when I compress choosing the different options in the HDR Toning, no matter what it does not collapse to the correct RGB space. I saw the tutorial about changing your color space to linear, and that doesn't seem to help.
These exr were from xnormal if that makes any difference.

Then open your exr, swap into the linear profile, tone map down to 8/16 bit then swap back into the sRGB profile
You may want to check the assigned profile when going back into sRGB colour space
I had added a linear profile. Its still bright Your link seems to be about up sampling up versus down sampling.
So I make the color profile linear
Assign to the exr (I cant convert).
Downsample the exr...
BUT I the the HDR Toning PopUp doing such.* I assume I set it to exposure and gamma. Touch nothing
Then I convert it to the linear?
Still not correct.
*This is in CS6, I don't know if previous versions required the HDR Toning when downsampling.
I should note both sites I have seen with linear just mention the gammut to 1. However, my Primaries were set to hdtv by default versus AdobeRGB. Changing this did change how the linear looked. So I am going to assume the primary needs to be changed as well to Adobe for a linear profile.
But you need to make the linear colourspace to work in (which you have done)
Then just use the exposure and gamma at defaults when tone mapping down to 8 bit.
It's the swapping back into sRGB colour space that's going to make it 'look' right.... It's checking the assigned colour profile to see if photoshop is still showing you the file in linear or sRgb...
If you can't get this working I can post a colour profile and action when I have access to my pc
here's the Linear colour profile (just because the actions will be looking for the name) https://www.dropbox.com/s/3ol22ybfd0f4ogo/Linear%20RGB.icc just needs to be here C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color
and the actions https://www.dropbox.com/s/gk3r5i6z4dj6so0/Linear%20to%20sRGB.atn i've created 2 for either an 8 or 16 bit file
