Getting t-pose back on a bone based rig?

I imported a mesh and used the Skin Wrap modifier. All seemed well till I clicked the "covert to skin" button.
Any clue as to what could be wrong.
I'm no animator, some help would be greatly appreciated
Oh, and I'm using max 2010.

Ok, got the t-pose working (turn off skin modifier, duh). Now when I collapse the skin wrap modifier the mesh ends up all distorted.
