In collaboration with
CGCircuit, a new site that allows you to monetize your own instructional content, I just released the first two videos in my four part series about 3d Character Art.
You can find the videos here:
VOLUME 1: Introduction & High Res Modeling Theory - ~1.5 hours - includes female base mesh - FREE
VOLUME 2: High Res Modeling Application - 2+ hours - $6.99
VOLUME 3: Low Polygon Modeling - 1+ hour - includes low polygon generic female .obj model - $6.99
VOLUME 4: UV Layout - 1+ hour - includes example scene file - $6.99
VOLUME 5: Baking Maps & Preparation - 3 hours - $6.99
VOLUME 6: Texturing & Shading - 5.5 hours - $8.99 (includes posed Hella model and textures used in demos for reference)
My intention is to create instructional content for the aspiring character artist who already knows the basics, but still struggles with getting professional results. My hope is to elaborate more on the artistic side of character art rather than showing technical tricks (although there will be some of that as well).
I've spent a lot of time putting these videos together myself, and the last two are in the works. I have also really tried to keep these affordable for students. Please help spread the word and share this with anyone you think might be interested. I'll update this thread once the new videos are released. Thanks, and I hope you all like it!
By the way,
my Hella model is used as an example in the videos, but the series is NOT about how to build that exact character! If you prefer, the first volume is also available on
my YouTube channel with the caveat that it's not split into convenient chapters like it is on
the CGCircuit site. I will only be posting the first volume on YouTube so please visit CGCircuit for the others!
If you have any feedback on what you'd like to see covered in future videos please let me know! Also, if you have any badly retopo'ed or badly textured models that I can use as examples, and you don't mind it being critiqued publicly, I'd love to use them! Just PM me.
And finally, a special thanks to everyone who helped me review the content along the way: Donald Phan, Troy Nickel, Niles Doubleday, Curt Binder, Saman Mahmoudi, Mike Ulloa, Chris Whitaker, Patrick Morrison, Katia Bourykina, Corinne Scrivens, and probably some other people I'm forgetting right now.

EDIT: Any chance these videos will be downloadable? My connection's fairly cack at the moment and hard to stream vids
and it's even only 7 bucks? i'll take 3 of them!
Dylan: Hah, nah, man. I think the beauty of this stuff is that there are so many different ways to do the same thing so what works for one person may not work for another. I think a lot of my own improvements have come through thinking about a problem in a different way because of what someone has said or shown.
Junglehermit: I can only hope that I sell enough to buy a cookie every now and then at lunch time, haha.
Angelgirl321: Thanks! I wasn't quite sure what to price it at. I just wanted to make sure it was accessible. I don't know if the other videos will be the same price or not yet, but if anyone else has any honest feedback on how I'm pricing this I'd love to hear it!
ceebee: Haha, thanks for the testimonial! I should copy and paste that on the web site.
aivanov: haha, thanks! My own voice put me to sleep so many times while editing these videos.
Torch: Sorry to hear about the connection problems. I think you weren't the only one... an I don't think the vids are downloadable from CGCircuit. You can always watch the first vid on YouTube though! Let me know if you continue to have problems and I'll bring it up with the CGCircuit guys to see if it's something on their end.
AaronCoberly: Thanks Aaron! I should mention that I learned a whole lot from you! To everyone else, Aaron was my lead back on Guild Wars.
And BTW the pricing is great
