Following images are the AO Bake, and then the Diffuse draft, AO, and Normals.
Here's the p3D link if you want to spin it around online.
It doesn't feel juicy in terms of colors at the moment, but in my head, I'm just trying to lay in the first render color pass before I start making massive color adjustments, in my head and the model, such as coloring the shadows to a bright value and another hue other than black.
AO and Normals, holy . . . it's quite the adventure and challenge. I had issue baking out, but nothing I coudn't fix with some modifications. Tried hand painting normals, etc, but of course, a better low poly and a more form fitting one would be better of course next time around. Though, a lot of the errors are so small I guess that some of the guys on the Polycount Hangout just told me to move on and get on with the texturing.
Definitely would love critiques. Second to last stretch of this race is beginning!
@Miles: I'm not entirely sure I can implement the critiques on this model since I'm trying to get this done several days before teh 15th of March, but I'll definitely keep it in mind for my next character
Hey man; my critique might be a bit late since youve moved on past the sculpt but I'm still going to make some comments
I think the sculpt needs a little bit more polish and clean up before doing final bakes. Specifically the cloth. It reads as a little mushy now; and the shapes you have are all the same weight, depth and roughly the same size. This applies to the splotches on his skin also. They're roughly the same size and depth. You could add some variation by having some bigger ones closer to his core, then have them less frequent and smaller as they go out close to the extremities.
For the low poly I think you could remove a couple loops from his scarf/bandana as they arent really doing much for the silhouette. Jmiles has some good stuff in that picture too!
@Daphz: The bandages I mostly used Selwys' cloth brush, though understandably, it doesn't communicate linen like materials too well. Do you have particular brushes you used, or was it a matter of stamping in a particular alpha?
Do you happen to have any tips for the final diffuse? I saw the Fiddlesticks character
Implemented critiques from Michael Muwanguzi and David Hollin (sort of), and continued refining. Getting real close. I think. I can smell it like I smell raspberry glitter lotion.
@JadeEyePanda - I dont have any specific brushes or alphas for cloth. It just takes a lot of tweaking until things look right. I stick to clay buildup, formsoft and standard most of the time.
As for my texturing, here's a breakdown of the base setup for a character I did a while ago -
one more thing*
I looked at the p3d link and you've still got a lot of loops that aren't really needed, if you got rid of some of them you can add a little more supporting detail in other areas. I think you should take another look at the ones in the fingers especially, as if they were to animate you might not get the cleanest result.
@jmiles and daphz: Got around to optimizing the mesh as best I could with the critiques. Removed unnecessary loops and placed extras elsewhere.
Added linen textures, dirt wear, and continued rendering. Still wondering how I should handle those potion bottles since figuring out a transparency solution may be too much.
Need critiques. Tomorrow is probably the last day I'm going to work on this.
Is it too dark? I get that the underside is basically pitch black, though I think tomorrow I will punch it closer to a darker shade of purple, unless it kills the effect that it has on the eyes.
Added more stretch marks on the belly, hand painted weave textures where appropriate. I think I solved some my potion issue and made them look decent, though perhaps they are the wrong color.
Not sure how to go about making the Specular Map quickly and effectively, though for Riot's sake, this seems unnecessary.
@oobersli: The cigar signifies some sense of older age and rough living. I also connect this to my maternal grandfather, who smokes a lot and feels like his skin was hanging off coat hangars.
This came out really nice! Ive been lurking this thread since you started it and its nice seeing the whole process. Solid job man! Finished just in time for GDC ;D

Not gonna be touching those potions for a while, heh.
Anyone have any critiques for novice me? Please?

just seems too generic and not really for the character
Seriously though, good luck!
Now onto a nice, composed super beauty shot.
Thank you everyone for the help!
