Welcome all , I'm modeling a Metal Gear REX, and I'm trying to be quite true to the original designs by Shinkawa.
It's quite hard to find information about this, because there are just so many versions of it. So probably some parts could be solved in many ways.
Although it's quite impressive the last big toy I've seen, I feel someway disapointed because it's not the same as the one we saw in Shadow Moses.
So that will be my goal. The REX from Shadow Moses. I'll try to do all the materials, and even a destroyed version and try it to have it low poly (even if i goZ for adding details on hardsurfaces, it will be just for normal mapping).

Right now I'm just about to finish the basic mesh. And it will be something around 50K tris, I know it's quite a lot, but in the other hand it's big, and it will be for the current hardware.

There's definitely reference which ever way you go, just need to know where to look. Even if you have to look on youtube for videos of REX, that's good reference.
Also, as a presentation note, don't render on a black background, even if the project is just a work in progress, it makes it hard to see your model as some things are falling into darkness.
Good luck!
And yes I do have references of all the REX, and this will be like the one form PSX, maybe I will change some proportions as you mentioned it, but I can do it when I finish the modeling. And it will be destructible in game, so I made a lot of things to drop during combat.
Next thing doing the unwrap and the materials.
What did you find out of proportion?

I'm having some issues with the legs (too many different versions), the back where the arms (railgun and radar) came from, and also the railgun.
I do have the Shinkawa's blueprints but really low res.
I finished the sculpting, and now I'm into mapping, this it's just an update, so a lot of work still to do!
But this weekend to the Global Game Jam!! So probably I'll be talking next week!
Have a nice weekend!
It's quite an honor read this, after all the great stuff you have made. I hope to give it the dusty feel you give to your art, but with my own "weapons". After next week it'll be totally destructible, so I¡ll upload some ingame shots, loosing it's integrity.
About what you said of the MGS artbooks offer, if you feel something wrong, make yourself free to point me into the right direction.
A side view WIP of the railgun side.
