Those of you who make realistic human models, what methods do you use to make it easy

easier*.

I am currently learning Blender/3D Modeling in general. It seems that my best bet would be to have a drawn human reference of the character I plan to model. To model over in the viewport.

Problem with that is, I can't draw for shit, letalone a realistically proportioned human character.

On another note, I have seen people mention to use ZBrush, which I assume is a detailing/texturing tool to use with the 3D programs. I'd love to be able to make models that rival that of Metal Gear Solid 4, but I still have a lot to learn.

You could probably output some obj in MakeHuman as a reference and import that with the opacity set low and your model set to xray (so it's always above everything else). Until then, <Andrew Loomis figure drawing for all it's worth response>

    1. practice modeling while looking at real anatomy reference.
    2. repeat 1 for as long as you need till you get better at anatomy.
    3. keep doing 2 and eventually it will get EASY to model realistic human models.

seriously, there is no other way! no "tricks" or "techniques" will make you better and faster unless you have a very very high visual/cognitive aptitude and excellent hand-eye coordination.

practice drawing anatomy for an hour a day or so. Doesn't have to be nice clean drawings but just try to understand what's going on under the skin. Maybe start with skeleton and proportions.

For modeling, i never use planes for reference. i usually start with zspheres or start with one of the human models that come with Zbrush.

ZBrush isn't a texturing tool, it's a program on itself and you basically 'paint' on the model to make it go in or out on the place you are painting. It's a great program for stuff like faces, bodies, animals, and all organic stuff. My explanation probably isn't very clear but you should look it up on youtube, search for '3D sculpting' or something like that

Get a tablet, Pick up Zbrush (Or any Sculpting program) Get some Anatomy references, Replicate what you see. Dedicate 2 hours a day to this. and you'll see improvement. Once you're confident with using Zbrush (ooor whatever) watch other peoples Speed sculpt sessions on YouTube:

    SupremeFunk
    Zbro Z
    JMC3D

At first I disliked these kinds of videos but now I prefer them over a 20+ minute video for a many reasons.

Do some Traditional studies along side this and you'll see more improvements.

    Print screen.

Overlay that 'Print screen' over a photo to see how 'off' you are. Then adjust your model accordingly.
