Material weirdness

Using Max 2013, part of my character mesh has this white material on it and doesn't change no matter what material I assign to it. I can fix it by making a box and attaching it to mesh. That over writes all the stack info though :(

Tried copying my skin and pasting it after this technique but the skin info isn't working correctly.

Material wise, how can I manually reset it in the same way as attaching a new box to the mesh?
