Hey Guys! I would like to show you my new level. This is an UDK remake of the place called Toxic Caves in my favorite Fallout 2 game.
About the level.
Fallout 2 has a lot of interesting places but I really liked this place when I was playing for the first time, it was in the very beginning of the game and you know nothing about the game's world. The place has been abandoned for more than 80 years and one day you came there and repaired a generator, that's actually the reason why we have some stuff in working conditions. The level had interesting progression from a simple cave to a man-made basement and eventually to the retro sci-fi interiors that was really mysterious for me - What the heck? What all this stuff is doing here?
The main goal for me was to convey the atmosphere of that place as I felt it. The level is pretty dark due to its desolation, that's why I was relying mostly on the video since it's hard to make interesting screenshots of a such dark level (it's like the Doom 3, there are awesome environments but you see them mostly in the flashlight spot,but it was necessary due to an atmosphere).
So, turn off the light and welcome to the wasteland. Hope you'll like it. Thanks.
P.S. I want to thank these guys for helping me with some particle effects: Brian Harries aka stxtch, Andrey Maximau aka dr1ver and Sergey Ivanov. Thank you guys
P.S.S. And thanks to Mark Morgan for the awesome music that has been inspiring me all the way.
P.S.S.S. And of course thanks to the Black Isle guys. You did a matchless game!

i always knew that it would be possible to make a first person fallout game that retains the atmosphere of black isle games, but your level is the first to actually prove that.
@Blaisoid: Your words are the highest reward for me Thank you!
@Makkon: I haven't used anything fancy, all materials are pretty simple, just playing with specular map. If you want to see something particular just tell me I'll do some screenshots. Here is the base material, 80% instance materials use this one. Other 20% are vertex paint and plants materials.
another thing is that its design feels strangely contemporary in fallout setting. there aren't any airducts shown in fallout as far as i remember but if there were any i imagine they would be more bulky and heavy duty in order to fit the style of other machinery and technology.
same goes for car, it would be awesome to see something more stylized there.
@Blaisoid: Agreed. I should have done something in fallout style
Great job, man!
Glad to see this finally out
Glad I could help a little with cascade, even if it was only a nudge in the right direction!
smallest crit .. i felt the toxic waste was too thin and watery...
@nitemaremaggott:
I don't want to say that my way is perfect, but I did it like this. All post processing was done in UDK. Two material nodes and playing with desaturation and contrast:
Thanks for the reply. This is great. Did you use print screen or one of the screenshot commands in UDK? Any AA in Uber post processing? Cheers again. So stoked on this level:)
I would suggest either creating some spill over using decals or vertex painting or lower the water (slime) level a bit so you get a glimpse of the back wall of the pit (or both).
If you go with the second idea you will have an opportunity to add some green lights (and/or fog) to give it a radioactive glow effect without affecting the lighting in the rest of the scene.
@pity: It's hard to say for sure, I started it about 2 years ago but I've been doing it with a lot of gaps and sometimes the gaps were very long (7 months).
@Philistyne: Thanks for the feedback. I understood what you meant and I agree with it. I think I should have used decals for that because all brick are actually the same asset and use the same texture. Anyway I don't want to touch this level anymore, this story is over
Finally I have found some time to make a few screenshots of different stuff from the level.
Hehe nuke colla in the locker, great stuff
It makes me want to play another fallout game badly. So make me another fallout game all by yourelf...Please??
Fallout = best game ever
Mmm maybe you are already fix that but in your first shot the one with the cave at the top theres this wierd shadow going on.
