In Guildford I get 120mbs down and around 40mbs up. I'm not looking forwards to living in Newcastle where the maximum I can get is 18mbs down. Seriously, what's up with that?
Shanghai China: 15mbit down, 0.5 up inside the Great Firewall. To the outside it's 5 and 0.5. Actually it's not too bad...downloading stuff via Steam takes about a day. What kills me though is the latency and that they keep blocking sites whenever they feel like it - "Your connection has been reset"
It's funny... in the last 14 years my internet speed has been mostly constant, around 2 mbit.
Hah. That pops into my mind whenever Google release their latest and greatest shit.. Damn them for being so good at sniffing out our needs and desires so well.
Wow, well I hope they come to Canada by next year. I'd sign up immediately. Bell and Rogers have a tight grip on the whole country so a huge contender like them will either force them to smarten up and compete or risk their market share being overtaken.
I'm not keen on Google supplying my internet, but if it means some actual competition around here (4Mb down, .5mb up, mediumish sized town) I'm up for it.
I'm on 4mb at the moment Finally upgrading to 30 on the 21st Nov, can't wait. Had it for 3 years at uni so coming home to uber slow internet has been a chore. My 3G is actually faster than my broadband atm!
have 24 mb at home , and frankly dont need more than that , only pay 20 euro tho , but still good shit ! Im curious to see how this pans out in Portugal
As far as I know, the main thing holding Canada and the US back from getting fibre internet is $$$. Smaller countries have had fibre optic internet for some time now, but the US and Canada never have simply because of the shear cost to install all that cable across the countries. Hopefully Google can eventually get this across North America because that would be pretty amazing! And more so I hope they don't cap bandwidth and monitor downloads (F**K you province of Ontario).
Probably because those cities don't already have Fiber service like FiOS. If it's like cable the areas with FiOS signed deals with Verizon barring any other providers from coming in.
youv been able to get gigabit internet in sweden for a while now for around $150. but that $120 is awesome price! is it available everywhere in the us?
Can I go on a bit of a rant here? Cause this is pissing me off.
The way our system works is fucked-up. The local governments have ownership over infrastructure. So when it comes to laying down infrastructure, they're in charge. Only they never lay it down themselves. Instead they contract it off to the highest bidder. Since that bidder pays for it, they also get exclusivity over that infrastructure.
So say Verizon wins the bid for the fiber-optics, guess what? they now have a monopoly over that. And it gets worse. Some areas, like where I live, AT&T (for example, but it could be any company) have won the bid for multiple kinds, and so they laid down the infrastructure for Cable (back in the day, the neighborhood is pretty new) and for Fiber Optics (more recently). Oh, and they already had phone lines since forever here. This means that if you want any kind of internet, your choice is either DSL over phone (AT&T), or Cable internet (AT&T), or Fiber Optics (AT&T). Which means zero competition, which means the connection sucks.
This is habitual and it happens all over the place. And this is why we (probably) won't see awesome new tech for a LONG time in these areas. Mind you, I'm in an LA suburb, I'm not isolated in the country or anything. That's why when google experiments with tech like this, you're seeing it in relatively remote areas like Kansas. It beats the headache of signing some deal with Verizon or AT&T just to try some tech out. The fact that you can get 3G/4G internet that's actually faster(!) than a wired internet connection isn't a coincidence.
This needs to change before we can really move forward.
in england, BT own all of the infrastructure, they're government operated. they control everything...
but due to competition laws they also have to allow other people to sell their services through their own networks. for example, i'm with Sky, for their TV and Fibre package. except to get fiber i also have to have a telephone line, the phone line and fiber package are both simply rented through sky, and the money goes to BT (or a large portion of it anyway). BT were the guys that came to my house to install the fibre connection. if i have a fault with my line, sky call BT and they come out to fix it.
EVERYTHING goes through BT.
BT don't want to spend the money on new infrastructure, so england is moving incredibly slowly to fibre, and the fibre we have is almost completely to the cabinet only, and not to the home. so the last mile is still copper cabling, which slows down the connection anyway.
we're literally being shafted. i'd love for google to come and muscle their way in, but i doubt it could ever happen, because BT would throw a shit-fit over it.

This is how it is in my neighborhood. AT&T laid down the cable and fiber infrastructure so they have a monopoly. But the Fiber only goes to the street, then from the street to the home it's regular cable.
So yeah, you're basically in the same shitty situation we're in. Unless I wanna move to Kansas I guess...
Only BT for competition in this town, who provide identical non-service. Were using them for about a year before switching, because even if it's just as poor, it's at least cheaper.
Just consider - 16% of the UK are on slower internet. What must that be like!
Internet was being particularly slow tonight, so I did a speedtest and:
Ok. I changed my mind. I'm happy for Google to supply my internet. They could not possibly do a worse job.
I have that speed (also TalkTalk) whenever I go home. Luckily I'm at University at the moment, and I get speeds like this. That said, I'd love Google to come and give me 700Mb/s download.
You'd be needing an SSD though to really max out the Google Fiber speed, otherwise you're bottlenecked by the speed of the hard drive.
Probably because those cities don't already have Fiber service like FiOS. If it's like cable the areas with FiOS signed deals with Verizon barring any other providers from coming in.
They actually had cities pitch for Google Fiber about 2 or 3 years ago and KC won out.
There was even one city that renamed itself to 'Google'.
Internet? Whats that? Here in Scotland we send each other deep fried pigoens.
But seriously, here in Edinburgh we have a new phone/internet station (whatever its called) and in the past month my internet has gone up from 6Mb/s to 14Mb/s. I thought that was good untill I saw other peoples results!
And go go google! Britain has far too many cold spots for internet, we need a change.
In Myanmar now I get intermittent 512kb/s through a mobile network.. and when I mean intermittent, I mean it connects for 10 seconds for every minute so its actually alot lower xD..
Replies
I need this!
But they've spelled fibre wrong :P
It's funny... in the last 14 years my internet speed has been mostly constant, around 2 mbit.
*We actually get 100mps Dl in work an 30mps Up

I guess we gonna have to wait some time before this whole new google fiber comes here to Poland... If ever.
because missouri is the muckhole of the united states? and kansas isnt' any better.
WTF!
Kansas?
Fiber is what, over phone land line?

durrr...nevermind..saw the cities tab
So true. I live in Missouri

At home its way better.
no lol, you're getting a speed 7x slower than the ones we're talking about, for about half the price.
ouch. That's bad, even by Chinese standards.
There was even one city that renamed itself to 'Google'.
Office appears to be slower though, cheap bastards!
