Hi everyone !
Was inactive for a long time. With the end of our project @ Ankama, I've decided to clearly update my portfolio
I'm starting a 3D Low-Poly Diorama (like those in White Dwarf's Eavy Metal section), and I'll give it a "mature-cartoon" style (e.g. Diablo 3) and will focus on painting.
There's a first sketch tothe left, with some refs:
And a quick base mesh to have good persp and marks

(don't think the Iron Throne will be in there, that was just the easter egg for the sketch we'll see...)
So... the WIP for the last couple hours ! Time to sleep, I'll continue tomorrow
For the lighting question: 2 possibilities
- I can assume the "game" would be on deffered engine, and so I'll make a real time lighting (in Marmoset e.g.)
- Or, most probably, I'll use Lightmaps, in Unity.
For the different color scheme at each level, I'll use different BRDF and Area Light.
I'll try to put the minimum light information directly in the textures. I wanna work them as real game assets (tileable textures, separate the reusable assets, ...)
can't wait
Another WIP screenshot ! I'll try to quickly achieve the concept to start the 3D
Just a little advance for the day, I've just started the top level:
Too big, too "empty", not the same style than the other floors
Little retake, the next WIP screenshot will be the final concept i think
I know you're not done, but i do believe that them windows are currently distracting from the rest of the piece - even overpowering the other floors.
But it still has to be a contrast between the "classy" floor and the dark basement/dungeon
I'd love to see how this turns out.

Would be great to see a game use a cylindrical world model. Looks awesome, looking forward to it!
I know the lighting will be difficult. I'll try to manage it with more little light sources of small range. That's one of the tricks I used on our cartoon game.
I wanna check the texturing today, so I quickly made one of the pillars (and the possibility to re-use it in many ways) and texture a bit, full Photoshop and Mudbox for the seems, cause I really want to have this "cartoon painting style" effect.
Sorry for the time laps, here some work in progress:
I started the modeling
And made the dungeon floor texture
Out of curiosity, are those renders of your pillars in-engine? The shadowing is friggin' dope, so I have to know.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the end results.
