So what does it mean when I select my polygons and it looks like this?
Polygon1.JPG

and what does it mean if I select polys and it looks like this?
Polygon2.JPG

apparently there is weird shading on the pants, wondering if there is something wrong with the polys on the model?

Simply different type of markings to help you see what you're selecting. With the solid it's easier to see what segments you have selected. And with the wire you can see what's underneath should you need to refine it. Though I don't recall it ever switching between the two when you haven't toggled it manually through pressing F2.

Could be that one of the materials are dx-shaded and the other isn't, maybe, dunno? :)
