Haunted by Component IDs in Maya 2013 x64

I was thrown for a loop this morning when I opened my latest 3D project to find Maya 2013 x64 displaying vertex and face component ID's for all polygons.

Thinking that I must have activated a secret shortcut command in the previous late night modeling session, I turned component ID's off (Display > Polygons > Component ID > Vertices + Faces) and saved the scene. They remain off for the current object selected until I create a new polygon object or open a new scene.

Then they came back.

No matter what I do, every new polygon object comes in proudly displaying it's component ID for vertices and faces. Every object, every new (or old) scene. I can turn off the id display for all objects, save the scene, close and re-open and there they are again. They simply won't stay off.

I'm turning to the Polycount community when Maya Help and Google have failed to resolve this.

It's a bit heavy handed, but one possible solution would be to delete your user preferences. Maya stores every modification to the UI and keeps track of all the options you activate in the menus in its preference files. They're kept in the "maya_data" folder under the "prefs" directory. If you delete them, Maya will re-make all the prefs files again with default values the next time it boots up. That's generally a bad idea though since you'll loose all the customizations you made to Maya's interface--including all your shelves. So if you try this out, make sure to save a copy of your prefs before you delete them.

A better solution than deleting everything might be to go hunting for the option responsible for displaying component ids in the different prefs files. I'm not sure where exactly that option is hiding, but I'd guess it's in the "userPrefs" file. I'd start by opening up that file in a text editor and searching for something like "componentid". If you're lucky you'll find the entry in the file right away that's responsible for your misery. Then you can delete that line and save your changes. Then the next time you boot up Maya it should stop displaying the ids.

The same set of display preferences can be found under Window > Settings/Preferences > Preferences > Display. If anything's checked on in here, it'll apply to any new geometry. Check that first.
