If enough people want a decent quality hardback, I can probably get a few copies done using my Lulu account?
Around 300 pages on standard grade hardback (8"x11") costs about £60GBP. Unfortunately, a lot of vanity publishers can't print and bind a book as big as this on higher quality materials. I know Lulu's limits for larger premium hardbacks are around 250 pages.
very cool! I've found that it's pretty slow on iBooks, the pages stay blurry for 5-10 seconds every time I turn the page so I ended up using Stanza, it's free and works a lot better.

Isn't the book made up of 150 magazine pages as its printed on front and back? Not sure how its calculated.
Yeah, I was just looking at setting it up through Blurb, but I got as far as a password protected prompt for the PDF so I don't really know where to go from here. Getting this set up on blurb would probably make this easy for everyone who wants a printed version.
Hey dudes here is a few new versions, one is for mobile and tablet devices it has minor image compression but its way readable. The other version is a Page Turn version you can click on the corners and turn the pages. Should work on most tablets other then apple due to it requires flash.
hey the campus computer which I am printing the book on doesn't allow .rar files and my own computer broke so would someone be kind enough to upload the pdf itself on dropbox or whatever so I can print this
Thank you so much for this book, its really amazing. I converted the PDF to jpegs so i can read it on my vita on my travels into work the train journey fly's by.
Hehe, yeah that's what I really liked when I saw it on the frontpage.... "Big News Vertex 1" ... I predict even more goodies in the future...no pressure though.
Thanks for the feedback and support guys and gals. As some of you have figured out there will be more then just one volume. In fact we have already started recruiting and some artists have already started working on their articles. What we would like from you the readers is some feedback or suggestions of what you like or did not like and what you want to see more of. Please help us help you by telling us what content you would like to see in the next volume. Email us your feedback and ideas to contact@artbypapercut.com thanks!

Well let us contribute financially for the next one for a start! If it means you can't feature art from published games so be it.
Excellent work Ryan and crew, I'm tempted to buy a tablet just to enjoy this lol. Works out at half the cost of printing it out anyways.
Out of curiosity, why is the book not printing out to cover the whole page on the copies people have got done?
Andreas we will look into that we are still shooting to keep them free but we might try and setup some type of humble indie bundle type setup. At 13k+ downloads @215mb's it eventually takes a toll on the servers and the bandwidth costs.
The reason the pages print the way they are doing it now is I have the bleed turned off on the public version. I set it up so that you guys could print your own copies if you wanted but you would be at some sort of quality loss vs sending it to a printer to have it done professionally. This keeps us safe from anyone saying it was setup for distribution and profit. If you look at the pdf right now it has no edge the book is real tight edge to edge. In the future we will work on setting it up for people and making it easier for them to be printed. We are talking to publishers on printing our books so that option might be possible in the future.
If you guys do print your books please post them up its awesome to see what you guys and gals have done on your own budgets!
the book on paper looks so sexy I do think that this should be an annual thing. Let us call the next book Edge hehe. I would like... maybe there is a thread already about design or mainly sci fi design. I do have some notes that I've taken and it has been interesting to deconstruct the process of a successful sci fi design. Maybe a book that focuses on that more but not the technical aspect like modeling it but more like the creation process and what goes on behind it(thought process). Maybe it's not a very good idea but it went through my head and wanted to see if it resonates or just gets lost and unheard. I'd like to thank a second time for the hard work that has gotten into this. Cheers!
thanks for all the hard work to everyone involving in making this happen!
also thanks for the mobile device upload - I was having a hell of a time getting that monster of a pdf file to load on my tablet!
Well I have being doing some digging and look what I found! Is there any chance we could get an official MagCloud setup so people can buy this magazine? I would prefer to pay a mark up to the contributors.
This volume can't be sold. Trade secrets, studio workflows and all that shit. Can't profit or take money for it. The NEXT volume however, is a different story. So long as those things are avoided, I'm sure a printed book and a kickstarter fundraising would be possible.
Ah dam, didn't read all the posts. Although MagCloud doesn't have to charge for profit, with zero mark up your literally just paying for the printing of the magazine. I would assume that should be fine?
At the very least it would be fantastic for VERTEX to use something like MagCloud to launch the VERTEX magazine, with the first volume being free and onwards and upwards with whatever you guys do with it. Assuming the content is there I won't have any problem paying for it.
are there plans for more installments of this, even if it was only like every 6 months, if the quality could stay the same like this one, i would pay good money for it.

+1 i'd even pay if it was yearly let alone 6 months!
We have officially started working on VERTEX #2! We hope that you guys can support us by throwing us some feedback and suggestions on our forums. Some great things are happening these days and we should have some great news to tell you in the coming days. Thanks for the support and showing us that there is a need for this type of book in our industry.
oooh i have a suggestion! first off.. havent commented here yet and just wanted to say thanks, and i appreciate all the effort put in by those who contributed to making this book. and now for my groundbreaking idea :P perhaps maybe if this is being released in a pdf format for use on computers/mobile devices only.. why not give the book a horizontal layout. it would work best i think with most monitors (unless they're rotated) and it would give the full benefit of having a full screen without the need to zoom in and out all the time.. what do u think?
also a table of contents would be great for quick reference.

try FastPDF. Much faster than Stanza. costs 3 bucks though.

Holy hell. I wanted to do the same at work, but I think our office manager would literally kill me.
Anyone else use the 20% off nDo2 code? I've scratched my chin over the $99 price tag for a while, so it was a no brainer for me.

Not sure how expensive MagCloud would be, but there are alternatives you could look at using to get it published also.
