UAT Art Jam

This Thread has been created for the University of Advancing Technology Art Jam. The Art Jam consists of three days of creating 2D and 3D game-quality art given a random theme. Artists will convene multiple times a day to post their progress and receive critiques, using these Polycount Forum Threads as a submission tool.

This event is open for everyone to join, but our critiques are given priority to artists that are present at UAT during the critique time. For those that are not present, we will reply to your post if the time is available.

Our schedule and rules are given below. This specific post will link to each of the critique threads, as well as field any questions about the Art Jam.
We are streaming each of our critiques and meetings at http://ustre.am/N8VS.

The theme is "The Southern Cross"

DAY 1: 2D
Challenge: 2D artists will create a concept from the theme to hand off to 3D artist the following day

Rules:

Teams must be comprised of two people - a 2D concept artist and a 3D modeler.
Concept artists will have 12 hours (12:00pm - 12:00 am) to create a piece of work to be used by their teammate the following day as the premise for 3D work.
Participating concept artist must attend the critiques that take place throughout the day.
Communication and collaboration with your teammate is prohibited.

Timeline/Pipeline:

From 12:00pm - 2:00pm, participants will generate thumbnails and early grayscale concepts for their 2D concept painting based on the theme of the jam. At 2pm, critiques will take place to review preliminary 2D planning within the context of the piece, be it character art, environment art, rigid surface art, etc. Critiques will be hosted by a panel of upper class peers and experienced artists in the given fields.

From 2:30pm - 8:00pm, participants will have the opportunity to build upon their concepts - adding color, refining staging, fleshing out the concept and conveyance of the piece. At 8pm, a second round of critiques will take place to check in and review the art in progress. Direction and advice will be given for finishing touches in the final stage.

From 8:30pm - 12:00am, participants will put into practice the advice given during the critique and polish their work in order to make it more compelling and representative as a finished, usable piece. At Midnight, final critiques will be given and a winning concept piece will be chosen.

DAY 2: 3D
Challenge: 3D artists will attempt to recreate their partner’s concept to the best of their ability.

Rules:

3D modelers will have 12 hours (12:00pm - 12:00 am) to create a piece of work that accurately reflects their teammate’s vision.
Participating modeler must attend the critiques that take place throughout the day.
Communication and collaboration with your teammate is prohibited.

Timeline/Pipeline::

From 12:00pm - 2:00pm, This is the beginning of the process for the character creation. Artists will create a base mesh or form to work off of. First steps are critiqued and design choices are analyzed as students show their major forms for their model.

From 2:30pm - 8:00pm, Artists will concentrate on the major portions of their character or environment details and work to finish the model portion itself. Details will be emphasized throughout the model from anatomy definition on into clothing, architecture, and prop design. An emphasis on utilization of game asset tricks and techniques will be paramount.

From 8:30pm - 12:00am, Artists will then proceed to retopologize and make each of their model’s game ready and begin the UV layout process.

DAY 3: POLISH

From ??? - 5:00pm, This day will count as a free-for-all section allowing students to work further on refining topology of models, UVS, or complete the texturing portion of their models.
This will be concluded at 5:00pm on Sunday when final critiques and judging will take place.
