I'm considering pledging just to get the dev kit as well, this seems/sounds incredibly interesting and a possible actual step forward in today's technology. following closely, looking forward to what they plan to do with all that extra money, seeing as at the moment of writing this, they've gathered up three times their funding goal.
so one of the things holding back the F-35 is that the pilot wears a VR system. the plane has cameras pointing all around so that he can look through the floor, etc. its both visual and FLIR. in fact the aircraft doesnt even have a HUD. they can't get it to work, theyve actually switched companies to develop it since the first was such a failure. problems include weight, resolution and vibration. now theyve had freaking millions in funding, gonna be interesting to see if a kickstarter can pull it off.
Having Valve, id Software, Epic Games and Unity Technologies all support the Oculus at the same time is enough for me to pledge for a dev kit! The worst thing that can happen is that Samsung, Sony and other big companies start some serious rivalry and competition after seeing the popularity of the product. If our pledges for the Oculus can kickstart the industry back into the VR-game it would be awesome.
Will it work if you need glasses/have less than perfect vision? Because that is NOT a given with head mounted sets.
Now this is an actual interesting question.
Here's from their faq:
This really depends on the shape and size of the glasses. The developer kit is designed to sit as close to your eyes as possible which makes it a bit unfriendly for glasses. That said, we'll do everything we can to make it as comfortable as possible for the developer kit and we have a lot of great ideas for supporting glasses in the consumer version (especially since huge portion of the Oculus team wears glasses everyday!).
I don't think I'm going to pitch in any money to this Kickstarter. I do wish them luck though, and would consider buying the final product if they manage to get this thing working. A virtual reality rig with built-in head tracking sounds pretty keen.
Point of note, getting this thing in an affordable price range would also be a much better method for watching 3D movies. Part of the issue with current 3D screen setups is that wearing shutter-based glasses actively decreases the brightness of the image. With a virtual reality rig, it should be possible to display full stereoscopic 3D without any image degradation.
I pitched in 300 bucks. I dont even have the devkit yet but after all the reviews i keep reading and watching on youtube, looks like this will be the best Christmas gift i've bought myself. Btw if any indie devs on here are looking to collaborate on some epic VR stuff hit me up. My next project will be VR after we finish our current title.
Me too, $300 was a bit much for a first generation toy like this, can't wait to see what they try to do with v2, but I love this idea for 3d, and head tracking. Did they ever say if it allows for forward/back and strafing movements? Or just rotation in the xyz?
Calling it a first generation is even a bit of a leap. Right now it's still cardboard and duct tape prototype. But, it looks amazing when you put it on.
It only tracks rotation, not absolute position. Though, this with some Kinect hackery could be pretty amazing
Considering their available positions I think we're in for really awesome solutions in the future to come. I can't wait for my devkit to arrive, I'm happy the kits were delayed so we will get slightly better sensors.
This is seriously the one object I want more than anything else right now. The idea of wandering around levels with an a device like the oculus rift and some nice headphones has been a dream 9of mine for a long time. I would love to make environments jsut for this.
Seems to have been received positively. I would be concerned though with that 30/ms issue they were talking about, I dislike motion blur in my games, and always turn it off. Is it heading to consoles too? Is the consumer headset going to be fully wireless?
I'm sure we'll hear more about console options around E3, if there are any. It seems like it would be easy to add support for it later on in a console lifetime if all games support 3d, but is probably a long shot for next gen consoles.
I personally feel no traslation senors is a bigger issue than 30/ms of lag, I feel I'd get a little bit sick if leaning left and right didn't do anything. I'm sure they'll cut the lag pretty quickly, depending on how much of it is sensor based and how much is display based.
mirrors edge would be trippy with this. or like Unreal 4 with the dynamic light and a flashlight motion tracker. OR FREAKING FATAL FRAME WITH A CAMERA!!!! OMG SRRY JUST SQWEEING OVER POSSIBILITIES! just re-release all games for the rift!
Mixing this with the Novint Falcon seemed like a good idea...too bad it looks like Novint is dropping the falcon.
Apparently one of the only guys keeping the falcon alive at Novint quit because the direction they were going was not good for those who bought the device.
This is the classic conception for fantasy of the future and yet it's here! Of course it will take some time but I think big things have small beginnings...Or judging by their donations relatively fair beginnings.

This is probably the thing I'm most excited about for 2013.
Same. I've been so hyped for this ever since hearing about it during the kickstarter. Still not sure if I want to order the dev kit to mess around with though or wait for the more fleshed out consumer version.

680x800 per eye is way too low for today´s standards
Isn't 1280 x 800 the lower end of HD (at least for youtube)
I'm sure if the initial version is 1280 x 800, it'll be fine and have it improve over time.
The tracking-speed looks to be fantastic! I want to day-z on a pair of these!
Anyways I'll be following this closely. Could be cool if it could be substituted for a regular montior.
That it would be! With a mountain of bacon.
Alssooo the link to your portfolio is broken has a , instead of a .
Unless that was intended?
strange, no one has pointed that out and that has been there for maybe a year+
Throw one of these at one of the emulator devs and they probably will.
(and yeah, metroid prime with this one!)
You'll get a working prototype by the end of this year.

I would definitely pledge if I had the money.

The unit seems much bigger than I imagined, is the consumer version to be smaller?
Shit, just imagining playing dead space with this makes me already poop in my pants

What's wrong with the XIO then ?
