I frequently use XREF for my models to keep my 3DSMax files small and manageable when importing decimated ZBrush meshes. I use proxies to make viewport performance better. But XREF has a major disadvantage, it loads very slow. When I load a 3DSMax file with 20 XREF files (For each object and each proxy a different file) it can take 2 to 3 minutes to load. If I use a large amound of XREF (140 files, 3.27 GB) about 70 XREF objects, stored in 70 files and 70 proxies stored in 70 files. It takes more than 7 minutes to load the file. Why are XREF files so slow to load, compared to storing all the models in one 3DSmax file.It is not my network or anything.
- Would it be faster to use a few XREF files with multiple objects in each file, in stead of one file for each object?
- Are there better alternatives like Containers, and are these faster?
