good to see this is still going without my participation! i've been really busy, but i'll be getting back into this soon.
there's another feature of google hangouts that i'd not seen before, you can broadcast the hangout as a livestream to youtube (pretty cool!) so it records it as it's being done, and people can watch the hangout live. the limitation here, is that the guy hosting the livestream chooses who the youtubers can see (by selecting the participants video feed) so we can only focus on one guy at a time.
what might be cool, is if we can arrange a date/time and have some of the high profile hangout guys, like Daphz, or Giles, you know, four of five guys, hangout and have it recorded/shown live on youtube... so lots of people can watch and learn, and hopefully see what a great time we all have in these hangouts.
I'm sure some people would like it, but I always found the charm of the hangouts being that anyone could jump in and work on art together. It was the coworking experience, the fact that other artists could see your screen and know if you were actually working or futzing off, and also that there were people there to chat with or ask questions of if you needed it. What you're proposing feels like a walled garden compared to that. Maybe if a hangout has gotten full and another needs to be created then broadcasting the full one would be beneficial. But I haven't really seen any over-full hangouts in a while.
What you're proposing sounds like it would make a fantastic video podcast actually, something I'd play in the background while I was at a real job (because if I'm at home working I want to be in a hangout). just my 2c
What you're suggesting would be good for alot of people, namely lurkers, because you get people on hangouts who don't share their screen or communicate and this would be ideal for them.
Personally, I agree with Tigerfeet. I've found hangouts to be a great social tool which breaks down walls between different levels of artist. I've learned so much chatting to people like yourself, giles, denis, the two josephs, and others, plus I've had alot of fun! I think the communication is what makes hangouts such a great thing, take the communication away and it’s more like a podcast.
But it’s still a good idea, and I'm sure alot of people will enjoy it and benefit from it.
I think we can have the both of best worlds. I think if there are scheduled days for instruction, learning, some Q&A with some high profile people, Demos, it can open a lot of room for specific and targeted growth, but on say off days it could be more spontaneous where it's just a hang out?
Joe, get yo self on this hangout! That sounds cool, and as hangouts have a restricted no. we could do a live Q&A on a dedicated thread, like they have done for crunchcast in the past. I am seeing potential here...

So i'm high profile now eh? Haha. I wish i could be on hangouts more but im so busy (as you know gir). I will definately find time to do something like this if it came up though. Sounds like an awesome idea though!
Just because people are not sharing their screen does not mean they are lurking. It could be that what they are working on is NDAed. The real benefit the hang out gives me is that I can work without feeling like I am locking myself away from the world. I would hate to take that benefit taken away from someone who is not allowed to show their screen.

i work on NDA material all the time, i either hangout with people who're under the same NDA (Giles), or just don't hang out at all. the whole point of the hangouts from my point of view, was so that everyone can share everything. if you can't share, don't take up a slot that someone else could be using to learn and teach.

Actually I hang out as per Craft the same reason. Some of us do not go to watch others versus just having another person working on art around.

I have to say that I'm guilty of not screen sharing. I sometimes go to hangouts just to watch others work and ask questions. It's been a great learning experience so far. It's also great to talk to others people who share the love of CG. I don't have anyone in my area who uses these tools or is even remotely interested in game art.
Work that you guys work on doesn't have to be NDA, it shouldn't be a choice between working on NDA and not working at all. Most of us just kinda make whatever we want in there for a couple hours.

i completely understand the concerns though, and something i would hate to see go is the drop in-drop out thing going on.
that said, i do kinda wish there was a moderation feature so we could get rid of people who never work.
