Permalinks are good cause it saves people creating a bunch of links which people have to waste time finding which one is active.
Unless someone is gonna mod a hangout I don't think you can really control what people talk or do there.
If you want a more focused hangout I suggest you start one. I am considering starting a weekly Jam Hangout where we can all work on the same concept or theme and share workflows and techniques. PM TeriyakiStyle if you are interested.

that said, part of the "charm" of the hangout is that it's kinda like a man cave thing where people can just say things without fear of feeling out of place. polycount as a community has a fixation with penises, for example. and cats. but i don't want people feeling uncomfortable about being there.
so yeah, i agree that the hangouts should be 90% work 10% play. if the trend continues i'll end the event and we can have "floating" hangouts again.

Ok, so... my argument against permalink. The PC hangout Gir started was posted around various places on the internets.
Which is fine in theory, however - it's now full of people not working and not related to PC - about 60% of 10 precious spots. And I'm trying to tighten up parts of my process I'd really like to ask a Polycounter about.

That's sad to hear, I'm only able to get on 2:30am EST to 7am, and the european guys are always working, and the hangout has a good vibe. I'd be very disapointed if I got on at like 10pm and the chat was like that.

No we don't always talk about 3D, if anything we spend more time just chatting about random stuff. But when people have 3D questions they shout up, and then people help out and it gets answered. Just like the PC skype chats. They are off topic most of the time but when people ask questions they get the help they are after.
It's simple, if you want an art only one, start one and request that it stays on topic only. Although there is no way to police that unless you temp mute people.
The thing is, that perm hangout has only been going on for a few days. We've had 'refreshed' links that have gone on for a week or more and they never went as south as you are describing even though they were posted everywhere too.
I just wanted to add a perspective of a guy brand new to polycount. I was invited to the Facebook group "Lunch Crunch" by a school mate which is where I first introduced to the idea of using a hangout to well, hang out. I was immediately enamored by the opportunity to share (and mostly consume atm) a vast array of industry related topics. The lunch crunchers are a friendly and talented crowd.
Then a polycount'er stopped by for a sec, and said he was headed back to his hangout. We prodded him and he provided link. Now the lunch crunch hangouts were good, but PC's was down right amazing. Now I'm not throwing that guy under the bus because I in fact was so excited that I posted the link to the facebook group. I can see that you guys for the most part had no real problem with that but looking back, it was pretty careless of me. I didn't show a close-knit group the consideration it deserved which is out of character considering I'm a moderator at flashkit.com where I have a very close circle of friends.
So for that I'm sorry but I didn't sign up just to say that. Polycount.com is clearly where I want to be going forward and would be happy to attend hangouts no matter the circumstances as they have already proved an invaluable investment in what I hope will be a long and prosperous career.
I'd also like to extend my sincerest gratitude to those of you who welcomed me with open arms and contributed so much in so little time.

I wouldn't say i'm being defensive. It's just i'm failing to see this huge change in behaviour people are saying has come about due to the permanent hangout. Every "negative" i've seen mentioned so far has been going on for as long as i can remember.
It seems to me that certain people think it unnatural and wrong for a bunch of like minded people to become friends and have off topic conversation. I mean if that's the case, why go on a hangout, just carry on working alone in a dark room instead!

Can we have modelers stream using hosting sites like livestream or twitch? I feel this would be a much more efficient method of more experienced members naturally helping newer modelers by letting them watch. There's also a chatbox so they can ask questions to the broadcaster.
I saw this method done on teamliquid.net (a gaming community) and it seemed pretty effective.

There's a lot of streams going on already and they're fantastic in and of themselves, they're intended for a different kind of learning. It's the difference between watching a tutorial (stream) and working in a classroom with the option of asking the teacher (hangout). Not a perfect analogy, I admit, but try out both and you'll quickly notice the difference: Streams are passive, hangouts are active.
I love them how they are, especially the one we had last night. Everyone's chatting away and laughing, 8/10 screens where sharing and everyone's working. Whenever anyone needed help or feedback/opinions that took priority, it was great.
