VFX Showreel 2011/2012 UDK

Hello!

I've just finished creating a showreel of mainly VFX work that I've created whilst at University on various projects. If you could take the time to watch it and leave some feedback on the video on youtube it would be much appreciated!

You can find the video at this link http://youtu.be/tM3CjkTg8dU

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks,

Jack

All your fires look the same and the fact that it looks as if the sprite is angled at 45 degrees doesn't help.

Displaying an explosion on a black background isn't the best option, having a ground plane (doesn't have to be realistically textured) and a non-black background is a lot better. And the explosion looks a bit strange at the moment, as if there's one explosion that goes up and then one that points down.

This thread is a good example of good presentation: http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=99872

I'd say look at effects in high quality games (BF3, Uncharted, Gears of War, Killzone etc) and try and dissect how they achieve the look of their effects and experiment.

@urgaffel - The explosion was a stylised explosion so that's the reason it goes up, downwards and outwards as I was recreating footage from an explosion from Mythbusters. My fires look the same because it's the same material and that would explain the fire looking like it's on an angle. I'll fix these problems. I've already checked out that guys effects and it's gave me a few ideas I hope to be able to create soon.

I have only been doing this for about 2 years on and off and I've been a bit limited on what I've been able to create but now that I'm finished I have some ideas of what I want to do so it's going to be a showreel that keeps getting updated all the time.

    Thanks for the feedback.

    Hey Jack,
I would have to agree that a lot of it does look the same but you've already received some feedback on that. I just wanted to pass along some great tips and advice that would help with your demo reel presentation.
