I can't seem to find a good way to merge these two subtools back together, so that I don't have a seam and can continue to edit the sculpt.

If you could get the verts a bit closer together, the subtool weld option should weld the border verts.
What about using morph target? I'm trying with that but I can't get it to work.
I can't find anything straight forward about using it.
Do you know how I could use morph targets to get the hand edits back?
I also tried dynamesh (I'm not very familiar with it yet). It fixed the issue and made it look pretty decent. Do you know how to get the subdivions back?
