3DS max TurboSmooth acting up... HELP!!

Hi guys.

as the title says my turbo smooth is doing some weird things and i have NO idea why... Maybe these images may help understand more of what is actually happening.

Please help... I got this model from a friend who wants me to work on it so i am unsure what he did to it... Is it possible to fix this error?

Looks like corrupt surface normals - I don't know exactly how the turbosmooth algorithm works but it looks like the smoothing is happening almost in the wrong direction.

Time for the good-old standby of exporting the mesh as a .obj with as little data as possible, and importing it again to clear 3DS Max state bugs and generated data corruption.

possibly some unwelded verts.

or try importing it into a new 3ds max scene as mentioned.

you could probably also have tried a "edit normals" modifier, unify all normals, collapse to edit poly

I had this happen to me recently. Turned out it was because parts of the model were unwrapped. Usualy i make the high poly first and then the low poly. In that case i wanted to update an older model with an hp normal bake so worked from an already finished low poly. Took me a while to figure out what was wrong. Easy fix just apply planar map in the uvw editor to the whole model.
