Class: Demoman
Theme: WAR! Reparations
Well, seeing as there are more than a few threads with actual models and textures, I figured I would get some concept art going
I am attempting to create items for the
Demoman with the theme "WAR Reparations!" Since the Demo lost the war to the Solider he has had a chip on his shoulder, and I suppose that is reason (or flimsy pretext) enough for him to want to get weapons similar to what the solider received previously.
1. Primary weapon since the demoman currently only has one, yet the soldier got his own alternate primary! (concept is below).
2. Secondary boots that have some kind of effect, like the gunboats, and would sub for the targe
3. A misc medal since the solider got a secret medal limited to a certain number of players.
The profile is meant to look like a cannon, but it is a two barrel breach-loaded grenade launcher
Need to finish up the concept on the other two

A workman boot with an over-sized sole and metal pieces strapped on. The name "Clodhopper" came to mind...
A medal incorporating a few of the demoman's weapons and the (team colored) Scottish flag pattern
I think the themes work better when they have a visual element rather than just an idealogical one.

So reconsider replacing the Sticky-Launcher/Targe with something that's similar to the Gunboats - as you wouldn't need them without having a Sticky-Launcher and would lose any accelerating ability.

This would be based on the Latin phrase "Ultima Ratio" - The last resort. Short form for the metaphor "The Last Resort of Kings and Common Men" referring to the act of declaring war. Louis XIV of France had Ultima Ratio Regum ("last argument of kings") engraved on the cannons of his armies."

Plus, it's leeching a really huge image without hosting it elsewhere. Dirty pool, old man.
You could easily just link it instead of posting it as an image.
Kind of threw the handle on at the end, I'll probably reshape it so it looks less like a tube.
I did realize that and thought that it might fit better as a melee or primary if it were to get the same effect as the gunboats. I was just establishing that is was not a misc item and has some kind of effect. However, I will probably add a shield so that it can be a direct replacement as the rules stipulate.
The bottom of the medal is jiggleboned to move since it looked odd being static next to the bouncing grenades on the demo's vest. Still need to tweak the gold part of the texture.
The boots will have an accompanying shield or something so it can be a direct Targe replacement. The boot model so far:
I'll try and get a shield replacement concept/model and boot texture for the next update, really I'm just trying to put off the animation as long as possible

I also made concept art for a shield and began a little modeling.
It is a bracer (forearm armor) with spikes to go with the boots, but i will submit the combo as such:
boots + bracer = chargin targe replacement kit with yellow color on boots and shield
boots alone = some new gunboats-like weapon to go in another slot so it can be used with the sticky launcher; it will use team color or no color
All that remains of the boots (barring feedback) is removing some jaggedness from the texture and a few clipping issues with the vertex weights
Medal, I added shadows and made the items stand out more against the background -- calling it done
Next update I'll aim for cannon texture and bracer model
I don't know if you would do anything with this, but this is the logo of the Crypt School of Grammar that the Demoman apparently went to.
Cannon texture is started but is mostly flat for now
Aside finishing the actual texture and details, I need to mess around with the contrast between the light and dark metals. but they are probably going to end up closer to the same shade of gray. Also it could use a design in the form of a normal map on the top two quadrants, but i need to come up with something, and only if time permits.
Bracer model, I've been playing around with the curves on the spikes a little too. Once the shape is set I'll begin adding the beat-up look.

but I understand...in order for it to be a "brace" it needs to be as large as the arm, the first model lied to me...I thought it would be larger...and..you know..a shield...

It looks very sharp, and considering that it looks very small... it's likely that it would look pretty strange in TF2 :S
I like that symbol a lot, but i just don't know where I'd use it. If I didn't already have the medal made, I might've incorporated it. But with the outline it looks a police badge and it might confuse people.
were you thinking it would be a large curved shield like a roman soldier would use? that would mean some major clipping. you got your information from the same person who told the heavy he would be fighting men! It's a bracer, a piece of forearm shielding
I will submit the following:
1. cannon - primary
2. medal - misc
3a. bracer - secondary
3b. boots - not misc or primary
3c. boots + bracer - secondary
My original intent was to have the boots as an item, but in order for it to be a direct replacement I needed a shield-like item and the bracer was added. They can use which combo of the boots/bracer however they want. So I count that as 4.
Propaganda from the solider! Just because his medal is made from a bottle cap and a discarded toilet paper tube doesn't mean the demoman can't wear a real medal! It may be more complicated, but it is quite a bit larger than the id badge even. If you have a medal people should be able to see it.
