[Dota2] Broodmother TBD

Hey all! I'm collaborating with Toph Gorham on an armor set for the broodmother. Here's what we've managed to piece together for everyone

He's working on a finalized version of the concept while I finish up the zbrush. So far- since the headpiece is limited to 150 tris,that will probably be used for the spikes, with the actual helm using the misc and possibly cutting the torso. We'll see how it pans out! Either way, this will definitely be an interesting week!

Yea I love the design, Makes me sad to realize that the final Lowpoly model budget wont allow for such details. the legs alone get about 1800 - 2000 triangles. That gives you just 250 triangles per leg. Good luck ! lets see what lowpoly magic you come up with.

I guess it'd be more like 175 per leg since the real focus is the lod1. The front legs shouldnt need as much as the rest, but I'll definitely need to be pulling out all the tricks for this. Thanks for pointing this out guys- I'll try getting rid of some of those smooth curves.

Sculpted up the proxy, retopoed and did a quick test bake on the legs- I've got some more uv space, so im either going to dedicate that to giving more resolution to this or creating unique damage. Took a bit of finagling to get the legs within budget and im not sure if I'm happy with it or not. I plan on doing a damage pass before the final bake.

Right now the legs when duplicated come out to 1,394. It's tricky adding and subtracting from these! You've got to always be conscious of how they will duplicate out.

((edit)) I adjusted things- still a test bake though- now it's at 1,396 :P Not sure I'm completely sold on the changes I made... going to get some sleep for now and look at it again tomorrow.

Hmmm I like it. Looks like some serious cast iron chunky armor for her legs. She is still a squishy character but this gives the illusion to the contrary.

Skiffy- is this a squishy character in game? I'm not too familiar with Dota2, or if giving an illusion to the contrary will be any kind of issue. If this entry is good enough to place, valve will be giving stats to the winning gear, so that could be an easy way to add defense. If not, well, we can just hope the dota2 community likes it enough to be ok with that illusion.

damn! amazing linework toph! crystel has her work cut out for her trying to reproduce that in such a low polycount. The WIPs of the legs are looking great crystel, so i'm sure you'll find a way.

Brood Mother is not a tank character. She does have high survivability because she can hide in her webs that she can place all over the map and when in those webs you cant be seen and get a bunch of health regen. She also has her Ultimate which is insatiable Hunger. Think Vampiric bite type attack which steals health with every attack. But I suspect folks wont care since the armor can look very cool. They start complaining it simply does not match the style or lore.

On another note that concept overview is NICE! just don't get too lost coloring it in and not finishing the armor hehe.

Like others have said, Brood Mother is not a tanky hero, but damn do I love this concept and form the looks of things the end result will be very nice.

A quick correction: Items in this game are purely cosmetic. No stats will be given to them.

Yes- but my comment was that if it managed to place for this contest. I was under the impression those items will be receiving stats. However- I may be mistaken.

Glad you guys like the concept enough to be a little lenient here. Toph's heading up that route- I'm picking away at the model and will do the best I can to do it justice.

I was under the impression those items will be receiving stats. However- I may be mistaken.

Alright- well, I managed to get a little more out of the legs- and got a bit of help testing it out in game really quick, so here's a screenshot of that. It looks like I need to play with the scale a bit. I also finished up the sculpt for the abdomen/head and started doing the lowpolys for them. I'm having a bit of a debate here. This is a screenshot of the helm in the 150 tri limit. I had a better version (the back didnt look as goofy) but it crashed on me so I'm rage-taking-a-break-to-post

I'm not sure what the best approach would be here, so if anyone has any input please let me know your thoughts.

There's a helm- 150 limit
misc- 350 limit

I've got the helm and thorax models to fit within that budget. At first I figured I'd do the spike mohawk with the 150 tris and put the helm/thorax piece in the 350. Now I'm not sure. It looks like it might be 'ok' to have the helm within the 150 tri limit. I figure that might make more sense in the store, but I could probably get more details in if I were to make just the spikes the 'helm'. The original broodmother has a kind of spike ponytail as a helm slot currently. Thoughts? Opinions?

Ok- so here's the head at 150 tris and at the 128x256 texture resolution

I don't think it looks [too] bad. Personally, if I was buying a helm from the workshop, I'd want the whole helm, not part of it, so I'm kind of in a personal debate here. What do you guys think- should I take something away from the helm and put it in the misc slot? Or do you think it'll be ok as is? I guess I should point out this is at in-game resolution-

Nah, you're dead on. I need to adjust the scale and positioning of the legs and do a bit more testing to make sure it goes in right. I was just so happy to get it working!

On a side note- Don't worry about the helmet guys- I'm keeping it in the helmet slot. It looks fine at 150 tris. Man, I'm doing pretty good cutting things close here, just finished the abdomen and bake at 700. I'll post some more progress when the textures start looking nicer.

The armour is great but I have to say I don't like what you did for the eyes. I think some sort of an old school small helmet slit opening would be interesting to see.

i actually really like the eyes, its similar to some gladiator helmets, and it just makes sense that a spider with a bunch of eyes would have a bunch of eye holes. the only thing i worry about is how it will look when its really small in game.

The very little work I did on Darksiders was pretty fun (I was on DMO

), gotta admit the styles sync up nicely, so doing this was pretty familiar feeling.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to easily set lod1 and lod0 on the same rig? Like, how to edit the mesh and not destroy the rig.
